Bird ID with pic!

dudsville · 05/01/2025 16:56

I asked last week about bird ID and had some helpful replies on here. We didn't think we had a pic at the time, but DH just found out that his outdoor camera did catch it, so I'm asking again to make sure. Can anyone ID this bird?

Is it a Jay?

Bideshi · 05/01/2025 16:57

It's a jay.

Msmoonpie · 05/01/2025 16:57

It’s a jay

There's a little visual search button top right of your photo - looks like previous posters are right :)

I think it's a Jay. It's a member of the crow family. Lucky you seeing one! I've only ever seen one once in my life.

Roselilly36 · 05/01/2025 17:01

Jay, they are adorable often see them in my garden.

candycane222 · 05/01/2025 17:01

Jay! Somewhat more glamour relative of crows and rooks! Stunning picture 😀

Tophelleborine · 05/01/2025 17:01

There's a useful app called Merlin which can help with this - it can also id birds from their calls and songs. Beautiful jay.

dudsville · 05/01/2025 17:06

Thanks all, you all said Jay previously, but we just couldn't find a pic online that looked right. We have merlin, just obviously a little inept! Do you mean there's a way to search the Internet with my own pic @newdoggo? Anyway, it was so stunning. Glad to know what it is!

Adorable?! They're evil bastards - eat the babies of other birds.

BellissimoGecko · 05/01/2025 17:20

Jays are stunning. Winter and autumn are the best times to see them - in forests, burying acorns.

Nordione1 · 05/01/2025 17:21

Definitely a jay

Newdoggo · 05/01/2025 18:10

You can use google lens, but on my PC on Mumsnet pics there is a visual search button on your photo, using Edge

Turophilic · 05/01/2025 18:18

Jays are corvids (crow family), They have quite a harsh cry, like the other corvids, but such unusually bright colouring as opposed to the more usual black, white and greys of their cousins. And absolutely gorgouse flash of blue when they fly.

The are quite happy to predate anything they spot, but it's ridiculous to call them evil, @titchy. Many birds will have a go at a hatchling if they can find one.

Jays mostly eat acorns and other nuts and invertebrates. They are responsible for a large percentage of oak seedlings in the UK because they bury such a high number of acorns each year and don't eat them all.

Absolutely gorgeous birds and a very welcome sight in my garden.

JackieQueen · 05/01/2025 18:23

We used to see these in our garden some years ago and I looked it up and it was a Eurasian Jay, I'm sure it was just like your one, they're lovely.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 05/01/2025 18:27

I find the Merlin app not very good at identify crows (corvids). But that is definitely a Jay.

Gilead · 05/01/2025 18:29

Jay. Seem to get a lot around the Norfolk Broads.

Ah, I thanks, I have got that function.

I'm sure I'm just posting in to the void here, but I wanted to add that we had a pair of them in the garden yesterday, so although we're not their natural habitat (we're leafy but not woodland), I think a pair may have relocated to our area. So lovely to see a new bird to our area.

It's a eurasian Jay. Often when you google Jay it will show you blue Jay which is American. Beautiful photo!

Allnewtometoo · 11/01/2025 09:22

They are a common sight here in Norfolk.

Turophilic · 11/01/2025 10:20

Coincidentally, as I was out in the snow yesterday a jay visited the garden for the first time in a while. They really are delightful birds.

Jasmin71 · 11/01/2025 10:39

The colourful Corvid, a lovely Jay. Related to Ravens, Crows, Rooks, Jackdaws and Magpies.

They're not delightful at all! They eat other birds' babies!

I think they adapt fairly well to most environments. We are in south London and often have several in our garden. They are very noisy!
