Son ( 7 ) has started making a strange sound.

Over the Christmas period, my son has been making a strange sound, normally when watching tv or having some downtime.

It's like an ahhh sound,
It's very subtle but I can hear it and I'm sure it will be heard when he's back at school if it carries on.

He's had a cold but I don't believe it's related to that. I've asked him about it, I'm not sure he knows that he's doing it. I'm wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar or can suggest anything to make it stop?

He been very full on these last two weeks, out of sorts as not at school, football has not been on and when it has it's been cancelled due to the weather and his behaviour and attitude has been difficult despite us sticking to early nights at bedtime.

I just feel worried about him 😔

With my daughter we ignored it when she started to make noises, we found if we brought it to her attention she was worse

I've already mentioned it ( which I'm feeling bad about ) what happened with your daughter?

She eventually stopped, we did find mentioning it made her worse at the time

There’s two options (that I know of), one could be if is is eg autistic, that he could be stimming, or my son is being checked out at the moment to see if he’s making noises (like clearing his throat then breathing out) as a result of the starting of asthma or a blockage with him throat/ nasal cavity. He’s on inhalers and a decongestant and a nasal spray but only time will tell. I was worried he has something caught but they said he wouldn’t be able to function so normally otherwise

greengreyblue · 05/01/2025 16:57

Is he making it on purpose or whistling through his nose ? Is he NT or ND?

GreatPlumPlayer · 05/01/2025 17:01

Everyone stims to a greater or lesser extent, tapping fingers, wobbling legs, whistling. I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you as long as he’s happy.

He's not ND or NT. I'm not sure if it's being done on purpose to be honest. He did mention last week that his throat felt blocked.

Like I said he's had a bit of a cold 🤷‍♀️ I'm not sure if it's boredom related, or does that sound stupid? 🤔

We had this, I think tics are really common at this age, often they just come and go again. My sons kept going and then changed into something else for a while then went again. I did have times when I gave antihistamines as I couldn't work out if he had a blocked nose or something. Still have the odd low level tic but hadn't developed into anything particularly worrying, but I was really worried when ge was younger in case friends teased him.

MadKittenWoman · 05/01/2025 17:15

If he's not ND (neurodiverse/divergent) then he's NT (neurotypical).

Eh? He is neither Neuro Diverse (ND) nor Neuro Typical (NT)?

Yeah I'm worried about this too. You know how horrible kids can be.

@mrstinsle does your son have autism?

mrstinsle · 05/01/2025 17:21

Sorry guys, I'm getting myself in a pickle over this and I'm not familiar with NT or ND initials.

He's not autistic.

People made the assumption you would know. That's why I asked bluntly if your child has autism. Hopefully you will get clearer answers now 💐

mrstinsle · 05/01/2025 17:25

He is a high energy child though. He's a bright spark and Very sporty and has to be kept busy.

This noise tends to happen when he's quiet and sat still. It also happens when I put him to bed and he's trying to nod off.

My 5 year old has just started to do this. He makes a kind of hmm noise, particularly when he is just about to fall asleep. It's pretty cute really.
I'd not say anything and it will more than likely stop. My eldest used to do similar noise things.

Holdonforsummer · 05/01/2025 17:27

My son (now 16) went through a phase of constantly clearing his throat, it became like a tic. It lasted months if not years. But he did grow out of it eventually and has never had a similar thing again. Try ignoring and be patient. Good luck.

Holdonforsummer · 05/01/2025 17:27

He was also very sporty and high energy - still is. I sometimes wonder if he has ADHD but he definitely has more energy than he knows what to do with.

littlemissprosseco · 05/01/2025 17:30

Maybe it’s his way of calming himself down, nothing wrong with that.
All kids go through phases, don’t stress

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 05/01/2025 17:31

My youngest developed some tics at this age, he used to blink very noticeably and also clear his throat usually when watching TV or concentrating on something. We never mentioned it to him as I didn't want him to become self conscious as I thought that would make it worse. They went away after a while.

Sportacus17 · 05/01/2025 17:33

It could be a transient tic, really common at that age. My daughter developed and eye movement tic at nearly 7… we completely ignored it and it went away after a few months. It was worrying at the time though and very hard to pretend she wasn’t doing it when she was.

troppibambini6 · 05/01/2025 17:34

Ds does this. They change but usually some form of mouth noise. Sometimes he doesn't do it for a while. I've noticed a new one over Xmas too. It's like a sharp intake of breath. We tend to just ignore them unless they are really bad and then have a chat with him to see if anything is worrying him.

Apollo365 · 05/01/2025 17:36

My son had a tic age 6/7 has grown out of it now. Came on suddenly; lasted months, disappeared suddenly. Very weird.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 05/01/2025 17:41

DS did this at about age 6/7. He made a repetitive gulping noise. We did ask him why he was doing it and he said he didn't know. I even spoke to the GP who wasn't terribly helpful. In the end, we ignored it and he stopped. He's now 18 and will occasionally mention "that noise I used to make".
