trying to be healthy - what can I have for dessert?

I'm trying to eat clean - have cut out all processed and sugary stuff. So far, I've done 4 days. I don't have much to look forward to, don't enjoy alcohol so I used to use desserts and all sorts of sugary treats to pick myself up.

Now I'm trying to eat healthier, there really isn't much to look forward to. I gave up meat several years ago and don't enjoy being vegetarian as much I enjoyed eating meat but I did still have dessert. Now...nothing.

Is there anything I can have for dessert or a treat that isn't fruit? I can't really do one or two squares of chocolate as I frequently ate several big bars a night. I suspect I may just have to make do with fruit but I thought I would just ask.

Desperately want to lose weight and also suspect I may be pre-diabetic. I have a good 2.5-3 stone to lose and I want this to the year I do it.

Sounds like you're really trying and well done as it's not easy. I'm in the same boat. I found this popcorn balls recipe and you can drizzle them in melted dark chocolate or cinnamon www.cravethegood.com/3-ingredient-popcorn-balls/

Another vote for medjool dates.

Great if you need a clear cut

And yes to dates as well

If you microwave chopped banana it goes like the inside of banana fritters from the takeaway! I have it with cinnamon and Greek yoghurt

Ooh how long do you microwave it for please?

Is it really going to be sustainable to not have any dessert apart from ultra healthy ones? Couldn’t you allow yourself a treat once or twice a week to give yourself something to look forward to?

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 05/01/2025 15:41

If you freeze very ripe bananas and blitz them, they have the consistency of ice cream. Many recipes out there where you can add other ingredients too.

Biroclicker · 05/01/2025 15:43

If I give myself an inch I'll take a mile so it's much easier for me to have nothing. I tend to do herbal tea in the evening. But if I allow myself a piece of fruit it'll snowball into a fruit salad with ice cream, sprinkles and a side of chocolate hot sauce.

ImmortalSnowman · 05/01/2025 15:45

Another support for frozen banana ice cream, add blitzed dates and toasted oats on top and convince yourself it's banofee pie.

These Alpro chocolate potstaste really decadent and aren't very high in calories.

Yes one of my instagram dieting influencers says to have one of these because they are portioned, not too calorific but are quite treaty!

NannyR · 05/01/2025 15:46

Do you like high percentage cocoa dark chocolate? I can eat a whole bar of Dairy Milk without even thinking about it but can only manage to eat one or two squares of 85% chocolate at a time and they really satisfy my craving for something sweet and chocolatey.

catkatcatkat · 05/01/2025 15:54

How about flavoured herbal teas as a way to get a nice sweet treat without a lot of calories? Bird and Blend have loads of lovely ones, both teabag and loose leaf options.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 05/01/2025 16:00

There are lots of recipes online for chocolate mousse made with banana or avocado. I blitz frozen banana with oat milk, cocoa nibs and raw cacao powder in a blender, then transfer to a pan and heat gently, add a bit of diluted arrowroot powder & stir until thickened.

Decant small portions into glasses and stick them in the fridge. You can have them with a few walnuts or berries, chopped prunes or a blob of Greek yoghurt on top. They scratch the pudding/chocolate itch but without the fat or sugar.

You're not a child, why do you need a 'treat'?

Think about that before you all pile on me 😉

Winterskyfall · 05/01/2025 16:07

Sometimes if I fancy dessert I'll have a corn cake (or rice cake) with a tiny smear of peanut butter and a little honey.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/01/2025 16:07

Thewrongdoor · 05/01/2025 15:14

But they’re ultra processed, and the OP is cutting that out.

Fair enough. Personally, I'm of the opinion that a little of what you fancy is sometimes necessary in life.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/01/2025 16:09

Has anybody tried baked apples in the air fryer? I think I might give them a go.

QuestionableMouse · 05/01/2025 16:09

Dark chocolate ganache - really simple, low in sugar and really rich so you feel satisfied with a small amount. You could add coffee or orange too.

Because life is fucking miserable enough without an occasional treat.

freidafreida · 05/01/2025 16:10

Frozen berries or fruit. I pair them with low sugar squirt cream (just a bit) and a little melted dark chocolate. Mix it all up and it's creamy, chocolatey and fruity. It's beautiful.

GrumpySparkler · 05/01/2025 16:10

This might sound a bit mad, but I bake a sweet potato for about an hour, squeeze it out of its skin in to a bowl and mix with a spoon of greek yoghurt. It's bloody lush!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 05/01/2025 16:11

On slimming world I used to have a meringue nest with a muller yogurt and strawberries. It was like having an Eton mess.

In my case, because my life is pretty grim and I need the instant gratification to get through the day. And yes I know that the root causes need to be addressed and I’m trying but that is much harder.

That’s an absolute shedload of sugar! The OP is trying to avoid sugar so a meringue nest isn’t going to help.

Slimming World etc allow them because they focus on low fat not low carb/sugar.

Probably because (I imagine) we're English and have been raised on the assumption that even, 'A nice cup tea' is a 'treat' to be looked forward to and oohed over.
