Hi,
Passing the time watching Flight Radar.
Saw this, why would they turn around?

LS1937 from Newcastle to Fuerteventura fr24.com/EXS34S/389b369e

Trouble on board? Need to land soon.

Seem to be circling , maybe to dump fuel before landing at Manchester.

We could probably guess all sorts of scenarios.

LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole · 05/01/2025 13:49

Pilot looked at the long day ahead of her and went "nah fuck it".

Tlaloc999 · 05/01/2025 13:58

Medical emergency? Disruptive passengers? Technical issue?

The arrivals board at Fuerteventura says they are diverting to Manchester.

Ta @Crabspread I had missed the three and a half hour delay.

Peasnbeans · 05/01/2025 14:09

I'm asking from Edinburgh where my Jet2 flight to Stansted eventually landed at 2am last night - feeling for those on the go-around, at least I was on the way home from Tenerife.

LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole · 05/01/2025 14:13

They've been in the air over an hour and have only got as far as Manchester, poor sods!

HappyNewFeckingYear · 05/01/2025 14:16

Good luck getting home @Peasnbeans I assume you are on the flight that is already delayed by two hours to Stanstead.

WhiteHairedMyrtle · 05/01/2025 14:16

Trouble on board.
Medical issue on board.
Mechanical issue.

I think it's most likely to be a mechanical issue because if it was urgent they wouldn't be dumping fuel, they would land.

Mechanical issue won't be serious enough to merit an emergency but serious enough so that they can't continue the journey. I doubt the plane is in danger.

Just got to pray she is not lighting up a cigarette!

notimagain · 05/01/2025 14:19

I’m not absolutely sure but I don’t think the 737 has the ability to dump fuel, so unless there’s a good reason to land at above certificated maximum landing weight (which is allowable in an extreme emergency) the only way to get the weight down is to fly around burning it off.

Given the length of the planned sector and given how far they had to go it might take some time to get the weight down, if that is what is going on.

I don’t think 737s can dump fuel, so it’s just burning it by circling.

HappyNewFeckingYear · 05/01/2025 14:22

You're right 737s can't dump fuel. They go round in circles to bring the weight down.

If you have in a crisis you just go ahead and dump (if you can)

However there’s usually a preferred minimum altitude for doing so (6000 feet agl rings a bell), if you dump above that altitude chances are the fuel will vaporize before reaching the ground…

It’s also not a great idea to dump in the hold if there is somebody sharing the hold at a lower level….

Thanks.
I took advice from MN and @notimagain about the Stansted snow and booked a hotel at Stansted Airport to avoid the snowy drive up the M11 and A1.
Should've landed at about half past midnight last night.
BUT my forward planning was outrageously thwarted when pilot couldn't land because of snow, and diverted to Edinburgh. Disembarked at 02:15 ish, safe but tired.
Night in an Edinburgh hotel and then hoping to take off imminently for Stansted - but delayed by 15 mum already...

Oh heck….!

I was mindful of that thread when I got up this AM and did take a sneaky peek at what the Stansted weather had done overnight, I saw it hadn’t been great but didn’t spot it had been so bad there had been diversion(s)..

Hope your plan all comes together today, good luck.

Several Ryanair and Jet2 flights ended up at Edinburgh - EMA BHX LHR LGW all closed at the same time apparently, and we'd been travelling 5&1/2 hours on a 4hr flight. Pilot casually said he was aware fuel was low and an issue... Aaaagh! EDI was chaos.

It looks as though it's heading to Luverpool currently.

DearestItIsSnowing · 05/01/2025 14:51

It says ‘Diverting to Manchester’ now.
