Urgent help

Young person has knocked at my home needing directions, as it’s late there are no buses or trains running.
Would you offer to drive them home?

I’m wondering if we can get a name and some details of how they got here etc and reporting to 101 but I don’t want to scare them and risk them being in danger/left out in the cold all night.

Help!

How young are you talking?

Where are they just now?

PerambulationFrustration · 05/01/2025 00:08

Is there anyone else with you?
How far do they need to go?

Needmorelego · 05/01/2025 00:09

As said above - how old is "young person"?
If this is a child then phone the police.

2fallsagain · 05/01/2025 00:09

How young? Male/female? Is it obvious why they e knocked at your door - are there other houses around, only your lights on? Are you home alone. I'd get more details from them and offer to call someone for them.

PrincessSakura · 05/01/2025 00:09

At a guess 15/16, could be younger though, on the porch under cover.

Don't drive them home. Get a phone number for their parents/flatmate significant person, then call them and let them know. The parent can come and get them, or pay for a taxi/Uber if they take one.

If the person is vulnerable and/or in danger then call the police.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 05/01/2025 00:10

I'd call someone for them, rather than get involved.

2fallsagain · 05/01/2025 00:10

Call the police if they are a child.

POTC · 05/01/2025 00:10

Offer to call the person they are heading to

PerambulationFrustration · 05/01/2025 00:11

I agree with pp call someone who can come and pick them up

2fallsagain · 05/01/2025 00:11

Or their parent. But if they don't want give you parents number then the police.

HappyKatieA · 05/01/2025 00:11

I agree, don't drive them home.
Do you know why they are out on their own? Are they in trouble?

Hyperquiet · 05/01/2025 00:11

Tricky nowadays. You want to help but people aren't always what they seem and it may not be appropriate too. I'm interested in what others would do when you can't arrange a taxi for them.

PerambulationFrustration · 05/01/2025 00:12

Don't they have a phone? You could offer to charge it for them if it's out of charge

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 05/01/2025 00:12

How did they come to be outside your house? It sounds bizarre?

InformerYaNoSayDaddyMeSnowMeIGoBlameALickyBoom · 05/01/2025 00:13

I would call the police tbh.

Calling the parents could result in the person being in danger, especially if they are under 16 and out at this hour anyway.

Don't do anything that will put you in danger either, like taking a child home to God knows what, or allowing people to access your phone number.

PrincessSakura · 05/01/2025 00:13

On it! Thanks everyone. Hopefully get in contact with someone first before police and get them home.

DurinsBane · 05/01/2025 00:14

I agree, ask for a parents number to call

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 05/01/2025 00:14

I know you want to help, and so you should, but you need to be mindful of yourself too.

PrincessSakura · 05/01/2025 00:14

My DH is going to have a chat and try and find out more info, thanks for the advice!

Yes don't drive them home. It all seems very odd for them to be out and lost in the freezing cold at midnight knocking on your door. But if they are completely genuine at least they are safe with you.

MummaEllie · 05/01/2025 00:16

Please can I just ask that you check you don't have any open windows/ doors incase it's a distraction burglary

Normallynumb · 05/01/2025 00:16

Do they not have a phone?
I would offer to call someone for them I think

Applepoop · 05/01/2025 00:17

Is this not a little odd with google maps existing?

that said, it’s bitterly cold, at least where I am - the kind of cold that could kill someone

but you must protect yourself
