Would you class Boursin as a perfectly acceptable cheese? Or a novelty cheese product such as Babybel,Cheesestring,Dairylea etc?

OP posts:
lochmaree · 04/01/2025 20:44

Perfectly acceptable. Definitely not in a category with babybel etc!

JulietSierra · 04/01/2025 20:45

Bloody gorgeous so who cares?!

GetyourheadoutoftheovenIris · 04/01/2025 20:46

Perfectly acceptable! It’s a French cream cheese.

Acceptable (and yummy!) ~ the others are more 'kids lunchbox' kind of category.

festivemouse · 04/01/2025 20:48

Novelty for me! Mainly because I don't class cream cheese as "cheese" in my mind 😂

ExtraDisorganised · 04/01/2025 20:48

It’s a proper cream cheese, not a spread or processed cheese product like the others

OrlandoFurious · 04/01/2025 20:48

DH and I were discussing this just today. We put it somewhere in between the two categories. Lovely though.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 04/01/2025 20:49

Since the Dairylea Cheese Cocktail wheel thing has disappeared from the shops Boursin is the next best thing.

AlicePottery · 04/01/2025 20:51

Same category as Babybel (I'm in France, they're next to each other in the supermarket, separate from acceptable cheese).

NigelHarmansNewWife · 04/01/2025 20:54

The cracked black pepper one is the best (but hard to find). Take it out of the fridge at least half an hour before you want to eat it and the the texture is transformed.

Blueuggboots · 04/01/2025 20:59

Oh yes. It's delicious.

Okayornot · 04/01/2025 21:02

Now I want a Boursin.

I don't know any adult who would eat babybel or cheese string, but I know plenty (including French cheese-eaters) who would have Boursin so I don't think it can be categorised with those others.

Zephyry · 04/01/2025 21:04

It's not a cheese board cheese. So not a proper cheese cheese. But a lovely spread for baguette as a separate thing

welshweasel · 04/01/2025 21:21

Fine for cooking with, or as a cheese spread. Totally not an acceptable cheese for a cheeseboard!

socialdilemmawhattodo · 04/01/2025 21:32

I added it to my friend's special cheeseboard just recently as everyone loves Boursin. I had 12 cheeses and it ticked the garlic & herb brief as well as vegetarian.

Choux · 04/01/2025 21:34

There's a new truffle one which is amazing. The best one of all. Got some over Christmas thinking it was a special edition only but it's still on sale in my Sainsbury's.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 04/01/2025 21:36

I’d put it as novelty cheese but a posh one, I’d say babybel or dairylea are novelty cheese for kids and Boursin is novelty cheese for adults, I’d put things like wenslydale with cranberry or other flavoured cheeses in the same ‘novelty adult cheese’ bracket

ChangeEmailAddress · 04/01/2025 21:37

Can you still buy 'proper' Babybel? Or is it just the mini ones now?

Alittlebitfluffy · 04/01/2025 21:37

I put it on my Boxing Day cheeseboard and nobody frowned upon it. It's good, and there wasn't any rubbish served so I don't see it as a problem. Goes lovely with all other cheeseboard items!

Ineffable23 · 04/01/2025 21:38

I would class it as a normal cheese but generally not a cheese board cheese. Though I have used it in a pinch on a cheeseboard and actually it went down exceptionally well.

Middlemarch123 · 04/01/2025 21:38

Well I had it on my Xmas cheeseboard and my greedy lot wolfed it down before all the posh cheese!

BotterMon · 04/01/2025 21:39

It's a novelty cheese (well you did ask for cheese experts!)

TheYearOfSmallThings · 04/01/2025 21:40

I would say it is borderline acceptable, same as caprice des dieux or those random flavoured cheddars that you get in coloured wax at Christmas.

Mmmm, wish I had some Boursin. Maybe some pain and vin too.

soupfiend · 04/01/2025 21:41

Its half and half to be fair, I never turn it down, wouldnt be offended if I saw it on a cheeseboard

Did you know there is a fig and nut version?
