How long does a supermarket shop take for you ?

I’m store shopping.. I nip in and out in max 20mins (Lidl and not in a busy town so quick and I know where everything is so sometimes 15min)

dh went today and took 2 hours + (he doesn’t usually do the shopping and said no one was on the floor and he could not find stuff)

the shopping is perfect - he got everything but since he was gone 2.45 hours I thought something had happened

I didn’t say anything as he is a good man but my god !! To be fair the snow threat has the shop packed and lots was sold out

I just want to add that I do the shopping usually as I finish earlier from work - he does most of the kids sports runs, bins, strips beds - he’s not lazy

Aldi I can usually do in 45mins, maybe less. Sainsbury's - bigger store, more distractions (clothes) probably an hour. I've usually done both in 2hrs unless I dawdle or go to other stores.
If you don't know the layout then yeah a lot longer.

Glassfullofdreams · 04/01/2025 20:19

It takes me about 30 minutes to do a full shop for the week.

If I send my DH to buy just 5 things, he'll be gone for at least an hour!

AlwaysFlats · 04/01/2025 20:22

In store it can take me 2 hours plus. One trolley always isn’t enough with bulky items and that’s the reason we almost always do it online.

I think he met a couple of neighbours in there some things were out of stock so he had to sort what to get instead (there was literally no bread)

It takes me ages when I go in.

I think partly because I’m out of the habit and partly because I’m not in enough to know the layout of the shop like when I was in regularly.
plus the last few times there was loads of missing items and I had to think about then source alternatives

online takes about anything from 10/20mins to an hour depending on how different it is from my usual shop.

Waitrose (nearest decent supermarket):
30-45 minutes, depending on how long my list is.

DH often takes less as he doesn't browse.

We have our shopping list written as you go along the isles, so not back and forth because the last item is in the opposite direction of the tills.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 04/01/2025 20:43

Online about 20 mins as long as I have a meal plan first!

In person I spend as long as I can afford to! I enjoy browsing the new things (fairly certain local Tesco security may think I'm a shoplifter though)

Paradoes · 04/01/2025 20:44

Good idea to write the list by aisles

Abput half an hour to 40 mins for a full weekly shop in Sainsburys, but I am in that store at least twice a week and have been for years, never shop online and only do top ups elsewhere. If I go to the one near work in my lunchtime it can take me nearly as long to find a few things because the layout is completely different and it’s a bigger store, the things like fruit and veg are easy as they are all in one place but as soon as you need to find say Marmite that’s it, you are doomed to walking up and down multiple aisles.

I usually shop in lidl and do the weekly shop when DC have their swimming lesson. So it takes me no more than 35 min in total from pulling in car park to driving back out again. It is at 6pm when the shop is pretty quiet.

I do enjoy going when I don’t have that time pressure though, and taking my time, browsing the middle aisle and generally being slower.

That is the issue with other branches of the same supermarkets.

For a while we did our main shop at Tescos at it was on the way home from riding lessons and I had to re-think my list writing as things were in totally different orders than other store.

By myself 20 mins. With DH and ds 1-1.5 hours😅 much prefer going alone

BCBird · 04/01/2025 21:24
