Talk to me about duvets/recommendations

Realised last night how old and crap ours is. It was from Frazers, an all weather one. It’s feather of some sort.
lots seem to be synthetic. DH tells me to get the most expensive, which are all duck/goose. However, I want to wash them and I know the one we have is a pain to dry and I only wash on the very hottest days.
Are synthetic ones any good, anyone bought a good one lately.

trying again. I’ve read some other threads and people recommend wool. However the one thing I don’t like is weight on me, especially as I am too hot at night. I tend to take covers on and off.

washable is important and I don’t have a tumble dryer so needs to dry well.

You need silk!

Silk duvets drape beautifully so you feel enclosed but are light in weight.

They naturally regulate temperature so too hot or too cold is not a thing really. And are breathable so you don't get sweaty (looking at you polyester fibre)

I love love love silk duvets and think they are far better than anything else.

You can get them washable, they need to be made for it (the way the filling is stitched in so it doesn't bunch). They dry quickly (MUCH quicker than wool!) cos they don't really hold water like wool does.

Another option. This is so confusing!

I have synthetic duvets -one from John Lewis & the other from M&S. both are double layer - so one layer 4.5 tog and the other 9 tog. They use poppers to attach together to make a toasty 13.5 . I am in Aberdeenshire and find these options work for us.

Each layer washes in my machine and I tumble dry or hang outside if the weather allows.

I have had them a while. If I was buying now, I would probably look at Wool as I cannot have down and find Silk too hot.

We have the M&S supremely washable duvets and can recommend. We have the all seasons ones - with a 4.5 tog and 9,0 tog and I can fit even the thicker 9.0 tog one in the washing machine and the dryer. I don't put both in together. They wash well and the filling doesn't bunch afterwards.

We have a synthetic double layer one (you can popper them together, but we use one in winter, one in summer). M&S.
Bought a new one this year and it is like a massive pillowy cloud to begin with, warm and cosy. (And washable)

I hate synthetic.

Goose down all the way for me, thin ones are warm, or get a two parter with a 9 and 4.5 tog that snap together.

They are washable. Pretty sure I have tumble dried mine.

I have a Snuggledown Hungarian Goose Down duvet which is machine washable. I love it.

KnittedCardi · 06/01/2025 13:28

I still have my very old, expensive at the time, goose feather 12 tog. It's very light, very warm, still fluffy, I used it all year round. It's the best duvet of any we have had. It's 20 years old, and I get it washed professionally every 5 years or so.

Don't get wool. I have friends who have had terrible trouble with wool duvets and clothes moths......😱

MandSCrisps · 06/01/2025 16:34

id seen the M&S supremely washable one. I do like washing the duvet because of pets etc.
The one we have is feather and has lasted, I like things to last and not had synthetic before.
I feel like if the department stores were open still I would just go in and feel them and make a choice much easier.
