I seen

a lot of people say “I seen…” instead of “I’ve seen” or “I saw”. Example - “I seen that guy you used to date in Tesco”.

And I’m curious, if you that, do you know it’s not correct or do you just say it because it’s a colloquial term as it is where I’m from? (I’ve lived where I am now 15+ years and had never heard it used where I previously lived). I see it a lot on here too though.

Clearly my own grammar is less than perfect, but I do admit this one just hits the ear wrong if you see what I mean.

Come and visit the Black Country, you’d be horrified.

“Yow sin them kids?”

It’s the “was you’s” fhat really get me.

It does my head in. I’m not originally from here, it’s like a different language. Even dh who is originally from here, but spent 20 years away was shocked when he moved back at how much broader a lot of younger peoples accents are.

Your not wrong but I need more pacific examples. Alot and definately.

It would fry your head listening to the grammar here where I live now

"I know'd that"
"Where are you's "
"I saw'd that "

Are just a couple. When I first moved here I was working in a bar, and I had to bite my tongue not to correct peoples grammar

Now I speak the same as everyone else

It's awful. And it makes it really hard for young children because they struggle with learning tenses.

If you speak properly it is much easier to write properly.

Recently someone sent me an email and it had no grammar, punctuation and words like youse - I genuinely could not decipher the meaning of the message!

I can hear my mum ranting to childhood me, "I have seen! I saw!" And me rolling my eyes then but being forever grateful now.

It's an interesting question. I know there are certain ways I speak, for example I'd say "the floor needs mopped" and know that's deemed incorrect by many but it would sound as though I was trying to put on another colloquial language, if that makes sense. Maybe the I seen thing is similar.

I hate it.
I also really hate we was there.
And my worst thing to see written down "a no" instead of I know. It's two more letters to write it properly!

Dunkou · 04/01/2025 08:22

I used to say 'I seen'. I knew it was wrong, it was just colloquial, and in a way it was bonding, kind of saying 'we are the same kind of people, same background, we get each other'.

I got out of the habit when I started working / mixing more with people not from my area.

pictoosh · 04/01/2025 08:24

Yeah it's awful but really widespread.

Same with 'done' rather than 'did'.

Berlinlover · 04/01/2025 08:27

It was only used by the rough kids at school when I was growing up.

MontyNojangles · 04/01/2025 08:27

I am midlands born and bred but my mum had ideas above her station and refused to let me speak with "too much" of a local accent or any colloquialisms.
I think I sound out of place in my local area 😂
