What do I listen to to go to sleep?

I am not a relaxed person and I find it hard to switch off and sleep (like now, I’ve been in bed since 11pm, awake) I hear everything and I easily get into a cycle of not sleeping.

Anyway, I thought I’d try listening to stuff to get me off, but it doesn’t seem to work.
White noise is just irritating, brown noise works occasionally, ditto water sounds/fire/nature sounds.

But nothing seems to work very often. It might work twice then inexplicably instead of a noise being soothing it becomes noisy and it’s all I can hear if you get me?

So, what do people use? Are there podcasts that are meant to lull you off?

Because I don’t relax I listen too much, so if I used an audiobook I would start listening to the story and getting involved, I think I need something vaguely boring and droney that is designed to basically bore you to sleep.

The whole sleep thing is a big frustration to me, because I am tired and I want to sleep but nothing really helps.

Any suggestions for things I can listen to would be greatly appreciated

Solfeggio tunes for definite. There are different hz for different vibrations to help different things 432hz for sleep.
Honestly, I find it brilliant.

How are you with actual music?

Another vote for Nothing Much Happens, and there’s another one ‘Let me bore you to sleep’ which works too.

The sleeping forecast on BBC sounds works well for me.

Desert Island Discs is my favourite, but sometimes the guests are too interesting and I just lie awake listening. If I’m having a bad night I’ll put one on and tell myself it doesn’t matter if I sleep or not because I’m still resting.

Stressing about sleep is a sure fire way to make sure I’m up all night, I find.

Radio 4 extra. I like to actively listen to the 10pm- 12pm comedy slot and then drift off.

I like rain on a tin roof loops. The roof of my house is steel with no attic spaces, and the sound of rain is very soothing.

escapefortheday · 04/01/2025 21:38

Off Air podcast with Jane Garvey and Fi Glover. It's a running joke that most people "listening" are using it to get to sleep.

Shitshower · 04/01/2025 21:41

I don’t think music will be my thing. I think I’m going to try the boring story, or the Norland train today, as I listened to a small bit of that and his voice was amazing.

There’s an amazing free app called Insight Timer. I love the Yoga Nidra meditations.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/01/2025 21:44

I use__ the Sleepy Bookshelf or Sleepy History. Very calming and soporific.

BearSoFair · 04/01/2025 21:44

This always works for me, no idea why, I don't find trains particularly relaxing when I'm on them! Have tried some other train soundtracks but they all seem to be computed generated and fall into a loop where I pick out certain repetition or the rail clacking is too loud, there's too much rain etc. This one being an actual journey (looped but not annoyingly so) makes it so much better!

Ok I have an embarrassing admission.

Years ago, I found I was getting frustrated with my weight because I knew how to lose weight but I just couldn't get the willpower to. Anyhoo, I read in the DailyMail (boo hiss) an advert disguised as an article talking about an app called.... virtual gastric band. And basically it has hypnosis sessions, night time ones, you listen to. Well, I have never fallen asleep quicker! I still listen to it now, about 10 years on and without fail it will knock me out.
Still haven't lost any weight though----

Biroclicker · 04/01/2025 21:50

Yes, minister. The pace and tone of voice is soothing.

Lessstressedhemum · 04/01/2025 21:55

Tibetan singing bowls
Sleep meditations on the Balance app
Bible sleep stories on the Abide app
Sleep hypnosis videos on YouTube.

It just depends what sort of mood I'm in.

Lessstressedhemum · 04/01/2025 21:57

Also Yoga Nidra but not as often at night. I tend to do that if I'm exhausted during the day.

notatinydancer · 04/01/2025 21:57

There's one on Calm with Henry Blofeld talking about the rules of cricket.
I did actually want to learn , but never made it to the end.
Also lots on Headspace.

Omnibus of series on radio 4 Extra. Currently listening to a first world war one and judging by the number of days I'm rewinding previous episodes it works well.

This sounds like something I'd enjoy. What's the name of it please?

Blimeyits2025already · 04/01/2025 21:57

I use the insight timer app (free), they've got a huge range of music, stories etc but I use the guided meditations mostly. Podcasts and stories just don't work for me.

I'd try scrolling through (when you're not trying to sleep) to find a voice that is soothing for you (there are loads that after less than a minute just annoyed me too much to sleep!) and then save them to your bookmarks. I've got a 'stash' and tend to listen to the same one over and over and then if it stops helping switch to another. Saves me getting wound up going through to find a 'good' voice when I'm trying to sleep.

Radio 4 on NYD had loads of programs about the shipping forecast.

Interesting but slightly boring podcasts like Something rhymes with Purple and The Rest is History and You're Dead to me

SirChenjins · 04/01/2025 22:05

I listen to Nothing Much Happens bedtime stories on the website - absolutely brilliant and guaranteed to get me off to sleep or help me to get back over if I wake through the night. It took a couple of weeks but my brain is now trained to associate her voice with falling asleep.

MaryGreenhill · 04/01/2025 22:05

Jeeves and Wooster audio books on You Tube are my go to .

Mandarinaduck · 04/01/2025 22:06

I listen to politics podcasts. I love political commentary and current affairs but I’m usually asleep within 5 minutes. Has to be even-toned voices, no music, applause, laughter or conflict, and usually just commenting on the news of the day i.e. not so interesting you can’t miss it.

Nollybolly6 · 04/01/2025 22:06

I got told about an app called iSleep. It’s free.

I didn’t believe it would work but omg it’s hypnotherapy for me, it took me about 6 months before I ever heard half way through.
