How do you think I can prepare for the cold snap?

How do you think I can prepare for the cold snap that is due? Apparently it can get very cold next week.

Should I book a grocery delivery? My card was scammed and I had to cancel it. If I book groceries, should I put it on the credit card maybe and when I get my new card I could pay it off straight away. Then I will have a problem next week if we get snowed in and maybe the post may not be delivered and I don't get my new card until the end of next week or beyond.

Where do you live? Unless it’s somewhere very remote/rural/northern you’re highly unlikely to be snowed in. How you pay for your delivery if you want one is up to you.

Sunshineandrainbow · 03/01/2025 14:11

I would go soon and get the stuff you need. If snow near you is that bad a delivery might not get to you

ThatsNotMyTeen · 03/01/2025 14:13

Who do you bank with? I am with HSBC and when I had to cancel my card recently the number and card info from the new card was on the app v quickly so I could add to Apple Pay and use before I got the physical card

BobnLen · 03/01/2025 14:17

Can't you just pay your credit card from your bank account as a bank payment

I never knew this could be a possibility. I don't know. My credit card is with a different organisation and it's not a bank but the post office. I don't have an account number or maybe I do. I would need to search for it. I know when I go to pay my credit card and I am taken to a payment section like and online paying.

I came explore this maybe as an option.

I have a bank app but I don't have my card details. I could have a look but it's not on my app.

Do you really need to ask people this question?

Surely you know that using a credit card is an option to buy groceries?

I can view my card on Halifax app

Baileysatchristmas · 03/01/2025 14:25

How much stuff do you have in? If you're very rural and think you might not be able to get out, then a delivery might not be able to get to you either. Could you go today?

Fragggggie · 03/01/2025 14:27

I can't view all my card details in the app. It only shows the first 4 digits.

I checked my credit card account app and it's not an account I p

There are lots of parts of the county that can get snowed in.

Baileysatchristmas · 03/01/2025 14:31

My worry is that if the Op is relying on a delivery and she's snowed in, the delivery will be snowed out....

Meadowfinch · 03/01/2025 14:35

I always have the following in the cupboard:
2 ltr UHT milk
8 sachets of yeast
5kg of bread flour
Extra tins of beans, tomatoes, tuna
A 2kg bag of rice
Large bag of fusilli
Green lentils
Couscous
Stock cubes, oil & spices

In the fridge there is a week's worth of onions, potatoes, carrots, green veg, 6 eggs and the Christmas cheese mountain. In the freezer, there's meat, chicken, white fish, peas, sweetcorn, spinach.

Three months logs in the wood shed.

With a bit of creativity I could feed the two of us for about three weeks. I doubt any cold snap will last that long in Hampshire. If it does, we're all in trouble. 😊

borntobequiet · 03/01/2025 14:36

It’s going to be a bit cold, not very cold, for the season, in most places. Unless you’re in a particularly remote/high/exposed place, you should be able to carry on as normal.
I live rurally and remotely, and regularly get snowed in - am not expecting to this time. The media is responsible for catastrophic reporting.
Anyway, use your credit card as others have suggested.

TheWholeMealBaby · 03/01/2025 14:41

Is there a particular reason you feel you need to prep for the cold weather, are you vulnerable in any way?
If you're a single adult some bread, rice, pasta and a few bottles of sauce will ensure you don't starve.
I also can't get my head around the palaver with the credit card!

Era · 03/01/2025 14:42

There are lots of us living in places where we might get snowed in. I don't think we are due excessive levels of snow next week but even so I live in the midlands 15 minutes outside a large city and we still get snowed in at least once every year.

anyway in terms of preparing for the cold:

grocery delivery is probably sensible (if they will be able to get to you if you're expecting a lot of snow).
get logs into the house if you have a log burner
make sure you have torches/candles etc to hand if you get power cuts in bad weather. Also charge up power banks.
Make sure your coats, hats gloves, boots etc are all ready to go
Dig out your thick fluffy socks and warmest jumpers/layers
Perhaps if you're worried about the power staying on, cook something now that could be eaten cold.
Make sure you close curtains etc to keep in the heat.
Bring grit/salt close to the door plus a snow shovel.
Check your hot water bottle is still in date.
Make sure you have a winter car kit in your car if you need to go anywhere.

Thats about all anyone can do

CandlesClementines · 03/01/2025 14:46

Op do you have water basics, maybe energy pack thing in case power down. We have camping stove for tea wifh a kettle just in case.
Torches, candle with Battery and hot water bottle again can be filled from camping stove if heating goes etc.

Oh OP. I have just looked up your other threads (multiple in the last week).

Do you have issues with anxiety by any chance?
