Would you switch takeaways?

If you've a favourite takeaway that's speedy, tasty and okay for prices, would you stop using them if you went on Just Eat (instead of calling the takeaway as usual) and discovered their food hygiene rating was "Improvement Required" (last food safety inspection April 2024)? Never noticed being unwell after eating one from there and have used them for about nine years.

I think that's all pertinent info... let me know if I've missed anything.

We used to get the best tasting takeaway from a place that was closed down due to repeated health violations. We carried on eating from there after the first one, until it closed down.
Was never ill, the food was delicious and the staff were great. So yeah, I would carry on eating from there.

WhereIsMyLight · 02/01/2025 17:45

What doesn’t give you the shits makes your gut health stronger?

SilviaDaisyPouncer · 02/01/2025 17:47

There's one I continue to order from, despite their terrible ratings. I've eaten there for donkeys years and never been unwell. It's delicious!

You can get a bad rating for being shit at paperwork so I imagine it's something like that.

I would stop ordering from them.
I wouldn't order from anywhere below a 4/5 stars for hygiene.

biscuitsandbooks · 02/01/2025 17:49

Wouldn't bother me.

TreeSquirrel · 02/01/2025 17:52

I’d try to find out why it is rated as such. Paperwork errors or technical breaches can lead to requiring improvement.

catkatcatkat · 02/01/2025 17:53

I’d look up the full report here before deciding anything: ratings.food.gov.uk/

SomethingDifferentBloomed · 02/01/2025 17:53

I wouldn’t order from somewhere that had less than a 4 or 5 star rating tbh. I’ve worked in kitchens and a 5 star rating is not hard to get… it’s the bare minimum of what I’d expect in terms of basic hygiene.

TangerineClementine · 02/01/2025 17:55

I wouldn't worry about this personally.

chipsandpeas · 02/01/2025 17:55

wouldnt bother me

cariadlet · 02/01/2025 17:56

If I'd used them for that long and never had a problem, I'd carry on using them.

Blueberrycreampie · 02/01/2025 18:01

If I knew somewhere had a bad hygiene rating, I definitely wouldn't order any food from there.

I've just looked up all the takeaways near me and the majority are 5. Is this normal? I see flies on the doner meat of one of them every time I walk past and it's got a 5 Shock

mitogoshigg · 02/01/2025 18:05

You can get that rating from poor paperwork and box ticking. I'm not saying it's not important to do paperwork but it's easy to mess it up

Ihopeyouhavent · 02/01/2025 18:08

Wouldnt bother me. Been ordering from the same Chinese/Kebab shop for 20yrs!

LozzaChops101 · 02/01/2025 18:17

I’d go on the full report and what you can see yourself. I’ve known great places that have got terrible ratings for being crap at paperwork, and I worked at a place I would never buy from that got 5/5. About 10 years ago I was working in Chelsea and our EHO said he was the only one covering the entire borough(!) and I think the shortage has only got worse since so I’m not sure anything is being checked thoroughly!

Neighbours87 · 02/01/2025 18:31

No, a lot of those bad hygiene ratings come from paperwork issues, especially for immigrants who don’t know the language. If you’ve been eating there with no sickness I wouldn’t stop.

HellofromJohnCraven · 02/01/2025 18:32

Ah God. I want to go and check our Chinese score.
However, it's hot, tasty and delicious and
It's the only one that delivers to my house.

LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole · 02/01/2025 18:33

Oh I'm surprised, I thought many on MN would be swerving them for ever more! Such a sensible crowd tonight and some excellent points made.

I would want to check the details of the rating before deciding. Having seen just how rank some places are, I'd not want to order from them if there were real food hygiene concerns around cleanliness, food storage and handling and pest control.

Lovethatforyouhun · 02/01/2025 18:35

this happened to one we like. We waited until they were re tested and got full marks.
Don’t reward filthy behaviour

stomachamelon · 02/01/2025 18:38

Tbh I wouldn't go looking so that probably tells you all you need to know :)

UndermyShoeJoe · 02/01/2025 18:39

A family member orders from a take away that got a 1 star I messaged them when I saw it in the paper and they didn’t care. Very much of a not died yet.

While I sat there imagining just how filthy and improperly stored is the food does the place have to be/have to get a 1.

When we met up any time I make sure I order from my own places if it’s a take away I don’t trust their ordering habits.

I think it’s easy to go wrong (via the paperwork) though if you’re maybe relatively new to the UK or not totally fluent in English.

soupfiend · 02/01/2025 18:40

OH is obsessed with things like this and when we used to have takeaways wouldnt order from anywhere less than a full 5 and he's always scanning what a restaurant is or cafe or wherever if we're out

Im far less bothered. I go on what my own experience is.
