Please tell me about Himalayan salt lamps

DD has gone travelling and has brought over, along with her houseplants, two of these slimy bastards that just sit there in their little ponds. I hate how clammy they feel.
My questions are, are they supposed to take the moisture out of the air, or do they make it more damp? Where's the best place to put them apart from the charity shop? If I put them somewhere slightly damp (garage) will it get more damp in there? TIA

You need to have them on for a while each day to keep them dry. If your house is particularly humid or damp then they will absorb the moisture and start to leach liquid and make a mess of whatever surface they're on. Mine gets warm (and therefore stays dry) as the included bulb is a standard one. When I'm not using it for any period of time like holidays, it gets stored in a sealed bag with silica gel sachets and doesn't disintegrate. They're lovely esp in winter but you do need to look after them.

I haven't read all the comments so this may have been said but as long as you use the lamp the warmth of the bulb will keep it dry.

I'm so confused. Mine is just a lamp. There's no pond or slime. Are you sure you're not talking about snails? Snails and salt are very different things, and they don't mix well.

Yes OP, have you been trying to put a bulb in a snail?

@LuckysDadsHat My sons (14 and 17) dared me to!
It wasn't like the salt you put on chips. It was very strong and frankly quite abhorrent. Not pleasant at all.
Silly boys 😆
PS. It wasn't on by the way. Not that mine really ever got hot.

Edited

hahahha this is what my son dared me to do too. Tastes vile

I am ashamed 🤣🤣

Craftycorvid · 02/01/2025 23:30

Just got myself one as I love the gentle soothing light. It gets switched on for a while every day and so far seems perfectly serene, not dissolving or doing anything weird.

I live in the tropics. Bastardy nightmare presents for my teenaged daughters. Giant, heavy, puddly, shock-risk.

TwinklyNight · 03/01/2025 04:58

Lamps like these?

I have mine sitting 2 metres from a humidifier. Is that bad?

Don't put them in the dishwasher, that's all I'm saying.

Sounds as if there's a story there...

I was bought one as a present, have recently thrown the fucker out as it left splatters on the wall and was wet to touch and yes I did have it switched on and house not damp

Multi-cat household, and none of ours have ever gone near our Himalayan salt lamp. It sits on a chest of drawers in a corner of our bedroom, emitting a warm orangey glow when it's switched on every evening. We have it on for a few hours and then whoever comes to bed last switches it off.

We've never known it get even remotely damp.

OP - might I suggest you put yours near a radiator to dry it out? Hopefully it won't disintegrate.

Thank you. Yes, I've done that and they are dry now.

I should confess that they weren't slimy - I exaggerated that slightly for comic effect.

They've been next to the radiator and are now dry, but I'm just plucking up the courage to switch them on as I'm not keen on getting an electric shock.

Slimy?. They're not supposed to be slimy. They need to be kept on and in a dry space. It's literally salt. It'll do what salt does if it gets wet.
