Anyone else already feeling the January blues?

I am feeling a bit low today.

Part of it is that I have just come back from visiting family abroad and have come back to an empty house. Before Christmas I had a couple of bits of good news and also my trip to visit family to look forward to, but now everything feels a bit empty. The weather is not helping of course.

Yeah January is bad

I feeling them really really badly, it's not helped by the fact my cat has been missing for 24 days. I try and stay hopeful as I've not had any calls to say she's dead but I think the not knowing is even harder.

So on top of the usual January blues, I have the missing cat blues too.

How is everyone doing? I’m feeling the lowest I’ve ever felt this January.

I have been really craving warmth and sunshine but no budget for a holiday soon (it’s booked for this Autumn)

Everything feels so bleak and hopeless.

💐

I can totally relate. I've just emerged from having flu over New Year. I now have my period. And it is so dark and miserable all the time. I'm starting to feel depressed again (long history of depression) and am longing for sunshine. 😩

We have blue Monday soon, once that has gone, I start to feel my mood pick up - hang in there only a couple of weeks to go.

MsPug · 08/01/2025 08:06

When I worked in an office I always had a torch to leave at 5pm in the winter. In February so not too long away but I can't remember the exact date I'd go out after work and think wow I don't need my torch! Then it's all down hill to summer. Hope this helps! It always makes me smile
when I think about it. Also my daffodils are well known the way and they are a great little mood lifter 😊

WhatNoRaisins · 08/01/2025 08:31

I'm surprised by how much I'm missing all the Christmas decorations. Went to the supermarket the other day and it all just seemed so bare.

Other than that I'm not too bad. Had a really bad case of January blues last year that left me in a very dark and desolate place for much of the month and I'm glad I don't seem to be getting a repeat of that.

OurDreamLife · 08/01/2025 08:36

I’ve been in an awful mood all week and today is no better. It’s not like me at all so I’m convinced it’s January to blame.

Sixpence39 · 08/01/2025 08:48

Back to work blues for me! So miserable after having 2 weeks off and seeing what life could be!

WhatNoRaisins · 08/01/2025 08:56

I've also decided to be more realistic with resolutions, I'm detoxing the junk food but keeping the hearty dinners. This is no season for salads.

prettydesertflower · 08/01/2025 09:04

This thread is such a relief. I thought it was just me feeling low since the year started.

Lovesea658 · 08/01/2025 09:05

Yes, compared to January, I prefer the warmth of June.😌

TheTwirlyPoos · 08/01/2025 09:32

I think January can feel brutal for lots of people. But that's because they are lucky to have lovely christmasses. Christmas for us means spending time together, lovely food, decorations, fun things to do.
Then January comes and it's cold and shit

One thing I find helps is doing a balance of healthy things like dry January but also self care stuff. And book something nice in if you can.

ellibelly7 · 08/01/2025 10:53

@TheTwirlyPoos & @WhatNoRaisins Yeah its definitely better to go easy on the whole January detox / resolutions thing. We still have loads of Christmas Chocolate and goodies left over but rather than eat it all day I'm just having a a bit of chocolate or a biscuit with my evening cup of tea, at this rate we will still be eating it in May!

I defiantly think of January - February as a transition time rather than as a time to go out all guns blazing. I was feeling quite flat and low yesterday but feeling better today already.

Yes! June is by far the best month.

Lobstercrisps · 08/01/2025 12:46

I like January. It's cosy, calming and I can relax at the weekend instead of socialising.

I'm having champagne tonight because I have an open bottle. I don't drink much so no need for dry January.

Oh and yoga. Lots of time to just be on my yoga mat.

Think you might be on the wrong thread.

Lobstercrisps · 08/01/2025 13:36

@XxSideshowAuntSallyx I'll get my coat....

madaboutpurple · 08/01/2025 14:05

Planning a holiday could help. I'm looking at ideas for later in the year.

WhatNoRaisins · 08/01/2025 14:14

I actually don't mind winter in of itself. There's a lot of comforting things you can lean into and I definitely sleep better when it's cold and dark. The problem for me is when it goes on too long, where I live we've had really dreadful springs the last few years. If I knew it was only going to last until March that would be fine for me.

That's okay. Someone has to like January!

I'm just feeling doubly down at the moment. I wouldn't normally mind January and actually like cold, snowy or frosty days, but with a cat missing all I can think about is her out there in the cold.😪

Stressybetty · 08/01/2025 18:25

Yes, tired, freezing cold and had enough of everything. Just rowed with DH and have flounced off to warm up in bed

superplumb · 08/01/2025 18:28

Yes me and its only thr 8th!!
I may try some vit d spray under my tongue to see if that helps.

CalicoPusscat · 08/01/2025 18:33

It's just picking up again after the festive season over and things resuming to normal. And it's so damn cold.

I think there might be a psychological pressure about Xmas and all events actually so we're conditioned to expect nothing else until Easter. Marketing creates this and I'm not immune to it.

WhatNoRaisins · 08/01/2025 18:36

I think even for people who are quite religious there is a lot of consumerism around Christmas. It's a good distraction from day to day crap and we can really miss it when it's time to move on.

BlackMagicBrazil · 08/01/2025 19:14

@Lobstercrisps I'll join you in the Odd People Who Like January corner 😀

I dislike winter but January is my favourite month of the season. I enjoy Christmas but when the decorations come down my whole house looks larger & tidier & fresher. I put a couple of winter decorations up - snow frosted wreaths & such - & love the minimalism of that.

I'm not particularly consumerist & my children are older now but Autumn still seems to be months of thinking about gifts, purchasing gifts, hiding & wrapping gifts...I like the fact that's all over. I often pick bits up in the sales, but there seems to be a lot less shopping, organising & thinking. And I've got a few nice gifts to read or play with from Christmas. I'm tee total so no dread about Dry January.

Already the days are getting longer & lighter & I tell myself that the freezing weather is killing the germs so we're less likely to be ill!

I entirely understand that I'm an anomaly though & send my best to all those suffering. I have friends with SAD & this is a really hard time for them.

@XxSideshowAuntSallyx So sorry re: your cat, I hope she's found safe & well soon 😐 🤞🏻
