I mean cook with it or not?

BatFeminist · 01/01/2025 18:14

Yeah go for it

Gracelet · 01/01/2025 18:14

I would

Happygirl79 · 01/01/2025 18:15

Use it

HugoYorway · 01/01/2025 18:15

It will be fine

Wibblywobblybobbly · 01/01/2025 18:15

You'll be fine.

bigTillyMint · 01/01/2025 18:15

I would open it and check it doesn’t look or smell or taste funny, then use it.

I can’t see what would happen to canned food?

LauraNorda · 01/01/2025 18:15

Canned stuff should last for decades.

Trallers · 01/01/2025 18:15

I have done it was fine. Only noticed the date after. Do smell it first though just in case!

Anonym00se · 01/01/2025 18:16

I would. Give it a good shake, it’s probably separated and half the coconut will be stuck to the bottom of the tin. I always eat OOD tins. The quality might be slightly impaired but it won’t harm you if it’s a few months over.

ssd · 01/01/2025 18:19

Its 10 months over though....I'm giving it to ds to take back to his flat, i dont want to poison him....i dont know if he'd smell it and know if it was off

OP posts:
Munchyseeds2 · 01/01/2025 18:29

It's fine

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/01/2025 18:30

Best before is 'advice', as they used to say... If it isn't green or hairy it will be perfectly fine to use!

Dilbertian · 01/01/2025 18:31

If it was off the tin would be bulging.

The dates on tins are Best Before - nothing to do with safety. IIRC the standard BBD on non-perishable foods is two years after manufacture.

As long s as tins show no signs of change or potential change, they are fine to open years, decades, after their BB dates. If a tin is rusted or bulging, then you do not eat the contents. Not even if you're a student.

AppleBlossomMay · 01/01/2025 18:45

I would, since it's tinned. Just make sure there aren't any severe dents or any sign the seal might be broken if it's one of those tins where you peel back the lid.

Oh, and if you use it, give the can a good shake first to mix up the contents as it's likely separated.

TimeForATerf · 01/01/2025 18:53

I’d be still using it in 2030, it’s fine.

user2848502016 · 01/01/2025 18:55

Of course it's fine. Tinned food lasts a lot longer than their best before dates (obviously if it looks or smells weird when you open it bin)

Letstheriveranswer · 01/01/2025 18:57

I've opened coconut cream or milk a year old and it's gone a bit orange brown, didn't smell bad but didn't smell totally right. I'd say if the colour isn't right, don't use it.

DeliciousApples · 01/01/2025 19:18

As your child won't have a clue if it's off or not I'd suggest you don't give him it and use it yourself if you think it's ok.

I wouldn't want food poisoning due the date if a quid lol Grin

DeliciousApples · 01/01/2025 19:19

For the sake of a quid.

HereForTheFreeLunch · 01/01/2025 19:20

I wouldn't give it anyone else- but fine to use myself while cooking.

AppleBlossomMay · 01/01/2025 19:26

Good point @DeliciousApples and @HereForTheFreeLunch , I missed the OP's post saying she was giving the can to her son. I'd open it myself and use if ok, but wouldn't give the can to anyone else.

JustCrow · 01/01/2025 19:26

It might taste soapy.

BigSilly · 01/01/2025 19:30

Canned food lasts forever unless can is damaged

BobbyBiscuits · 01/01/2025 19:31

I would certainly open it. Tins last year's after their date. If it smells or looks odd then don't use. But there will be separation naturally.
