Birthday gift for eco conscious mum

My mum will be 70 soon. I have organised a family meal at a lovely restaurant for her but I would like to get her a gift too.
The problem is that she is increadibly hard to buy for. She is very frugal and environmentally conscious so buys very little and only from charity shops. She dislikes consumerism. She doesn't like any perfumes, skincare, makeup. She just uses a very basic moisturiser and that's it. Any photo gifts like photo books, canvas etc she would find tacky.
I don't have a budget. It can be big or small but I would like to give her something. Any ideas would be great. Thank you.

Tickets for something? Any concerts/shows/plays she'd like to see?

Dontgetinvolved · 01/01/2025 00:36

Thanks, tickets are an option, not sure what she would like to see. I would prefer a physical gift even if just a small token.

A tree or rose bush for her garden?

I love jigsaws from charity shops. I ask for one each birthday/Christmas.
I treat it as a sort of jigsaw library- I get a jigsaw, do it, return it to a charity shop and get another.

Washing machine balls. The eco variant.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 01/01/2025 00:40

Yes! A fruit tree. It will have blossom in Spring and fruit in Autumn. Or a shrub if short on space. She can watch it grow.

RainbowSquare · 01/01/2025 00:42

Beeswax wraps you use in lieu of cling film. Very eco friendly.

There's a company that recycle old cashmere sweaters to lovely fingerless gloves and wrist warmers.
I think called turtle dove or similar. Lovely and soft and very warm.

If she has outside space, something like a rose or a fig tree might be nice. Both can be grown in a pot if she doesn’t have a garden or in the ground if she does.

Adopt an animal for her via Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

These make magnificent, much appreciated gifts:

Alternatively, but equally magnificent:

Something from a reasonably local small business- alpaca wool socks, handmade soap, handmade chocolates.

KittenPause · 01/01/2025 04:08

Second hand book or jigsaw from a charity would probably make her happy

HAPPYNEWYEAR2025 · 01/01/2025 11:06

Beautiful bird feeder?

A weekend away?

HAPPYNEWYEAR2025 · 01/01/2025 11:10

A massage?

My mum is not dissimilar. I buy her a gift of books from independent bookshops - the sellers put together a bundle based on her preferences. She has a system where she lends books to people with the expectation that they will keep them. So for her eco/swedish death cleaning principles this works.

JamMonster · 01/01/2025 11:18

Could you make her something? Bake or perhaps some sort of bath salt mix or something? Or an experience like a willow weaving class. Plants are a great choice too. There’s a great website ‘shegrowveg.com’ which sells unusual seeds if she likes growing things. I also assume she’d already have all the Nancy Birtwhistle books but if not they’ve be a great shout - lots of how to make your own de-icer/floor cleaner/washing soap from ivy and conkers - all non toxic and actually work!

I bought these for her before but she has never used them!

Thanks for all the great ideas. She plays the cello and loves classical music so I might see if I can find a nice ornament to fit in with this.

And as a bonus, have stopped my nails from splitting!

crumpet · 01/01/2025 12:37

Is there a classical music concert you could take her to?

I know you would like to give a physical gift but it doesn’t sound like she would like one.
