An I find anything out about a police caution from 30 years ago?

I’ve been told a family member received a police caution for wasting police time / making false allegations. It would have been around 30 years ago. Is there any way I can find out anything about it - whether it exists, further details etc? The family member is alive.

Thank you.

Ask the family member?

They would not take too kindly to my enquiring!

Ah okay. I did wonder if it might be a public record or something like that.

Why would you want to know? How is a minor offence 30 years ago any business of yours?

Ihatemondays1962 · 31/12/2024 20:40

A caution won't be on public record.

FlickFlackTrap · 31/12/2024 20:41

No you wont. Why would you need to? It was 30 years ago!

BobnLen · 31/12/2024 20:43

You seem to know what it is, how much more detail do you want,

Fair enough, what about the person who told you about it in the first place? Or another friend family member who's likely to know?

Other than that, as its a caution from 30 years ago there's no way for you to find out i don't think

Whether it did indeed happen.

You can’t, OP. 30 years ago, cautions and warnings only stayed on the police record for three years before they were supposed to be scrubbed (there’s obviously a list of major crimes that were exceptions to this rule). For something as minor as false allegations, it’s highly unlikely to have crossed the threshold for permanent inclusion. Wouldn’t even show up on a DBS check.

However, that was down to the station’s discretion at that time - there’s a small chance it was overlooked or someone felt strongly enough to keep it on there. But you still can’t find out without consent from the family member concerned, legally.
