Walking boots that don't leak please?

TheHorticulturalHussy · 31/12/2024 14:51

My newish Brasher boots are already cracking after around 15 months. I walk miles each day with DDog through long grass and across fields, morning and evening. I wear 2 pairs on rotation - every 2 or 3 weeks they are washed, thoroughly dried and given 2 separate coats of good boot wax, so I don't think that they should be leaking already.
So does anyone have any recommendations please? Happy to pay more for better quality leather.
Thanks for reading 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

I think a lot of it is just luck and one person can have a brand that doesn't leak but a different pair of boots, same brand do leak for someone else

Thanks for all the replies and recommendations. Answering the question about drying - no, no direct heat, just sitting in the mud room for a week or so.
Re waterproof lining yes, but I hadn't thought to check for holes because the leather is so badly cracked I'm fairly sure that that's the real problem.
And perhaps I am expecting too much from my boots.

Sounds like you aren’t maintaining the leather- all leather needs nourishment and care-
Despite great care my Bareback leather boots leak but are supple and not cracked as they are looked after like expensive horse tack!

What about neoprene wellies? I love mine, you can get them from around £40 up ( I can see no difference between the £40ish and the£100ish ones)

My North Face ones don't leak but that doesn't mean all of this brand don't leak

I've got a pair of Ariat Harper Waterproof boots.

I bought them as yard boots (my dd has 2 horses), they've yet to leak, are lovely and warm. I use them every day to the yard and also to walk my dogs. I use them instead of my walking boots when out. Still look great and I'm good condition. I've worn them all day for days on end and they've not hurt my feet. Bloody brilliant boots

My boots were recommended by a friend- hers haven’t leaked and she isn’t as fussy about leather care as me .

Wellies don't give enough support if you walk on uneven ground.

namechangeGOT · 31/12/2024 15:34

I've had my Altbergs for over 10 years now. They're the best hiking boots money can buy. If you put the miles in they are worth the money. You'll need to go to an official stockist though.

Where does op say she walks in uneven ground? It's dog walking not the three peaks. I manage find in mine.

It's dog walking for me too but wellies don't give anywhere near enough support or traction. Not all dog walking is pavements.

I know, I read the op.

Another vote for Scarpas.

ohtowinthelottery · 31/12/2024 15:41

@oakleaffy Not in my experience. There's 2 layers of fabric with a waterproof membrane in between.

CapybarasAreJustGuineaBigs · 31/12/2024 15:41

It's the wet grass, it's an absolute killer for boots.

You could try some Keen Dry boots but tbh the newer ones aren't as good as they used to be.

I wear neoprene wellies for walking on wet grass. Super comfy, warm, and hugely more supportive than normal rubber wellies. Mine are Grubs Frostlines. I live in the deepest darkest countryside and have worn them on all sorts of terrain in all weathers, and found them extremely comfy and to have excellent grip. Worth every penny!

It's very uneven ground, mostly caused by tractors with the occasional escaped cow.
Re wellies, can't walk in them, reasonable suggestion but I have a bunion which I manage by buying and walking in decent (if leaky) boots. The more I walk the less it hurts.

You do have to go for the neoprene wellies with proper grips though, not just the wiggly lines on the soles. Those ones are horribly slippy but all the cheap versions have them. You need proper Grubs or Muck boots with proper grips!

Seriously try some good quality neoprene ones, they're nothing like normal wellies. I cannot walk in normal wellies but walk literally miles and miles in my Grubs, they're as comfy as my battered old Skechers trainers!

Frangywangywoowah · 31/12/2024 15:46

That's odd OP as partner wears Brasher boots he's had years and never gets wet feet.

CharSiu · 31/12/2024 15:47

I had fab Brasher boots that lasted years but they were bought 25 years ago. I have scarpa boots, prepare to part with £150 min though.

CoffeeINeedCoffee · 31/12/2024 15:50

Agreeing with the Merrell recs, SO comfy.

Randomontheinternet25 · 31/12/2024 15:53

M&S had some good offers on Colombia boots , I got some half price

Allnewtometoo · 31/12/2024 16:01

You could try decent wellies. Aigle are good, excellent grip and very comfy.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/12/2024 16:06

I've got a really old pair of merrall boots. They only get wet if my feet end up completely submerged. Although my sister was pointing out that they didn't have enough grip on them. I disagreed, and slipped over at that very moment 🤣🤣🤣

Yup. Try some high end wellies. Or snow boots.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 31/12/2024 16:11

The choice can also depend on your feet to some extent; I found Merrell and Scarpa women's boots too narrow, which was another reason for choosing the unisex Grisport ones.
