Is there an acceptable age limit to join the police?

They very rarely recruit where I live but are due to in 2025.

Problem is I've worked in another career for 20 years, teacher!

Would I be too old at 45?

Any one know or have experience of older people new to the police?

Police retire from 50 so can't see a career starting at 45.

Violet1988 · 31/12/2024 04:36

If you want to do it go for it, at 45 after a career in something else you have life experience to offer which is a major advantage and would help you out lots in the role. I know someone who joined after a full military service of 22 years and they loved it and did fab.

Violet1988 · 31/12/2024 04:39

35 years is considered a full police service now, up from 30. So you obviously won't do a full service but you won't need to having already had a long career and got a pension etc. By 50 if you no longer want to be in emergency response you could have well worked yourself into a different role. But even if not there are 50+ year olds on response.

I did it the other way round by the way joined young at 21 and did 5 years. I have now left and work in children's safeguarding which I love but I took so much from my time in the police that I continue to use in my job now.

I used to train new recruits, over 40's were my favourite students, the calmness and wisdom life experience brought them just can't be taught.

Are you looking at DHEP entry?

unlikelychump · 31/12/2024 06:17

Not uncommon these days

Crackers4cheese · 31/12/2024 06:17

they definitely want those with life experience now
and i am sure the retirement age has changed surely?

ThePoshUns · 31/12/2024 07:20

I work in police training, recruits over 40 with life experience are most welcome.
As you have a degree like a PP said you could apply under the direct entry detective scheme.

ThePoshUns · 31/12/2024 07:21

You just won't get chance to do 30 years obviously but can technically work until you reach 67

DustyLee123 · 31/12/2024 07:22

They like people with life experience, just make sure you are fit.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm N Ireland so 2025 I believe is the first time we've had police recruitment for many years.

No different entry paths for graduates as far as I can see

Give it a go!

Ceeekay · 03/01/2025 08:08

Don't let anyone limit you. You go for it and good luck to you! Star

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/01/2025 08:13

An ex colleague of my husband joined the police at 45.

notatinydancer · 03/01/2025 08:14

My local force take up to 57. You can then give them 10 years if you retire at 67.

AltiC · 20/07/2025 14:23

Can I ask how it's going @GreenJasper ? I'm part way through the application process and (if successful!) I would be 49 when I enter training (PC entry program Detective pathway)

coxesorangepippin · 20/07/2025 14:33

I'd apply at that age

I work in training the direct entry detectives. It’s an intense programme but we have had some great people come through, the more ‘mature’ trainees have a lot to offer as they bring common sense and life experience. Good luck!
