Dd got a new lap top, saved up herself and she's suddenly switched from watching stuff downstairs to just wanting to be in her room. Absolutely fine I understand that but what limits should we be putting on it?

About 5 or 6 years - until she emerges from the teenage years!

Seriously, I wouldn’t be putting any limits on it until after the holidays. Then I would suggest she can watch it for 1-2 hours per night after homework, chores and sports/hobbies are done.

But she's a tween I don't want to loose her just yet 😭

Yep definitely leave her to it. My 14 year old practically lives up there and has done for a couple of years now. She's my 4th teen and as pp said it usually lasts a while!

I've found the best way to not lose them is to go in preferably with snacks or a drink and sit and chat with them in their space. Dd grunts at me if I summon her down and try and start a conversation she can't wait to get away.
Happy to chat in her room though.

I tend to put limits on the Internet, because it's easier. So in our house the Internet tends to be on until 9.30/10ish in the morning, and then again from about 5-7 in the afternoon. Then after dinner it's just regular TV or DVDs in the living room.

Mine might choose to play downloaded games on her phone, or watch something downloaded, or possibly use some of her limited data, but it just puts a fairly gentle cap on the "all day every day", doomscrolling, and "play next" behaviour. And it does keep me off my phone to an extent (although I do have a lot of data!)

It's been so sudden she would watch TV downstairs and also play piano and chat but suddenly since she's got her lap top she won't come down
I don't know how she's going to practise piano because she would watch and play at the same time.

We have no devices in bedrooms. She can watch it and still be sociable. Or she can spend time alone without fixating on a device.

She’s 12 years old. If you don’t like it, you can stop it. Just put time limits on and switch the WiFi off. Are you always this much of a pushover?

LazyDaze94 · 01/01/2025 21:57

How do you know what she’s watching on Netflix? So long as it’s suitable, fair enough but how do you know?
