Vocal fry. Why?

I've just been listening to R4 and almost turned off. I could hardly bare to listen to the woman talking as her vocal fry was so pronounced
I've noticed some men do the same but far more young women. Is it subconscious or a deliberate attempt to sound more, I'm not sure what thb

I also find it irritating and affected. Especially the loooonnnngggg draaaawwwn drawn out words. Also often joined with the pronunciation of words with “i” as “u” or “e” eg ditch sounds like detch or dutch. I don’t think it’s an accent just a way of speaking (as I love the variety of accents and dialects generally).

I think I read somewhere that Sumaya on the last BakeOff series was an example of vocal fry.

Absolutely, sometimes she forgot and spoke normally.

Cattery · 30/12/2024 11:21

Oh is that what it is? I’ve noticed women speaking like that in American dramas. It’s almost like the words are stuck in the throat. Fucking awful

ExpensiveDecoration · 30/12/2024 11:35

I don't even notice it TBH. That Jane's Patisserie video sounds perfectly clear and normal to me.

Has anyone found any examples of non-LA people speaking this way?

I mean, someone upthread cited the king. So yes.

Ihavearedbag · 30/12/2024 12:12

I can’t bear it. It is very common in podcast-land so I have to pick carefully!

i like ‘real dictators with Paul McGann’ podcast (such a partridge-esque title) and PmcG has a lovely soothing voice.. then every now and again a woman from Newcastle with the worst vocal fry ever pops on and drives my heart rate up 😁

Cocolapew · 30/12/2024 12:17

Miley Cyrus used to do it but now has gone to the extreme of sounding like a 90 yo man with emphysema.

I always think of it as something women do to sound sexy and laid back, as the vocal fry part of the sentence sounds almost like they’re falling asleep. It’s really annoying.

It's what my body does naturally when I'm tired AF. It's far more of an effort to speak in my "normal voice" which is actually not my natural voice at all but something I've cultivated to sound more friendly and pleasant (and because when I moved here barely anybody could understand my regional accent). I'm not trying to sound sexy I'm just exhausted and most likely am longing to be able to go to sleep just as soon as I finish having to speak to anyone, even if it is only 3pm 😩

I thought she sounded normal as well. Maybe Ive become immune to it unless it’s extreme.

VegTrug · 30/12/2024 12:31

I cannot stand it! Very common with American women and it makes me cringe. There’s a few vloggers who do it and then wonder why they regularly have sore throats

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 30/12/2024 12:35

One of my colleagues has adopted it. I have to stop myself from snapping, ‘Why on earth are you talking like that? Speak properly.’

nestingvillage · 30/12/2024 12:40

NoCarbsForMe · 30/12/2024 09:30

It's very American and has spread vis the internet. It's extremely annoying!

Tell that to Andy Murray! His accent has tons of it, it also exists in other languages rather than English, I think Finnish is an example.

UmopapIsdn · 30/12/2024 12:43

I hate it. Grates right over every nerve.

BashfulClam · 30/12/2024 12:46

Zooey Deschanel is an example in New Girl but I don’t remember it being so pronounced in 500 days of Summer.

As always I recommend this video by linguist dr Geoff Lindsay for a really good overview on vocal fry

That's an excellent video.

Dubious about the video clip the OP chose to share and the motivation for doing so Hmm Sephora should take issue with it as it implies anyone in Sephora lacks critical thinking skills and I feel that is an outrageous attack on Sephora as a brand.

You might enjoy this...

I've seen this video before and I hate it. It's actually scripted and I think the male character may be notorious for being misanthropic. But to me, this is an entitled slightly older bloke punching down at a young woman in a minimum wage job. I found it almost unbearable to watch.

AppropriateAdult · 30/12/2024 12:59

It's a scene from Loudermilk, it's a sitcom - very much scripted, and yes, he's a misanthrope!

JayJayEl · 30/12/2024 13:00

Oh I hate this because I have an autoimmune condition that means I have a really dry mouth and throat, so 9 times out of 10 my voice is really "croaky" and I'm paranoid that people think I'm doing it on purpose!

TorturedParentsDepartment · 30/12/2024 13:07

Doesn't bother me at all (and I'm a SALT so more tuned into people's speech than the norm). Uptalk however grates on me - where the intonation of the end of every sentence goes up so it sounds like a question.

Yep, he is a dick to most people!

Great series.

Sux2buthen · 30/12/2024 13:12

@Augustusjoop i immediately thought of made in Chelsea Grin

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 30/12/2024 16:07

Has anyone posted this yet...?

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 30/12/2024 16:13

I see they have. But, no, Loudermilk is not a privileged bloke 'punching down'. He absolutely is a misanthrope, but he works as a cleaner, with the rest of his life revolving around running an AA group.
