What do you do in January?

I don't mean resolutions, dry January, starting a diet, going to the gym, that sort of thing.

What things are there in January that make it a bit brighter and warm and sparkly? We've booked for a Burns Night thing at the end, and a monthly storytelling night, also going to an Epiphany event at a cathedral. And a Fish and Fizz on Friday 3 January with a friend at her house.

What things do you all do? Or do you hibernate? That sounds good, too.

We are going to Edinburgh for two nights on the 2nd for a few days of fun before everyone is back to school and work.

We like a mix of beach or woodland walks then hibernating with candles and wholesome food as well as having some activities in the diary. We have tickets to School of Rock on 17th, a Burns Supper on the 24th then Girl on the Train on the 29th.

Great thread idea!

We're currently away and flying back on the 5th.

Got a little (UK) weekend away booked mid-Jan for me and DS.

Lots of soft play (just bought an annual pass) and hot chocolate mountains for me 😂 - I've committed to doing something outsidey with DS every Sat/Sun no matter how rainy so will do a skate park trip or a NT property on the way to/from soft play.

Determined to actually use our free cinema tickets through sky, so will see Sonic at some point I think.

AlertCat · 29/12/2024 20:14

Work! I have time off in December so feel rested and have regained some imagination and enthusiasm.
And grumble about how dark and muddy January is 😆

tinytemper66 · 29/12/2024 20:37

London to see a play from 2nd-5th Jan. Am dram rehearsals for show in February.
Mum is 80 in Jan too so celebrations.

BogRollBOGOF · 29/12/2024 21:28

To fill the void when I have to take the Christmas decorations down, I have spring-blossom flowery garlands with fairy lights to add some colour until real spring colour arrives outside.

When outside, I concentrate on things like new buds developing on twigs and bulbs emerging. January's natural beauty is subtle detail.

BottomlessBrunch · 29/12/2024 21:29

I save the M&S beauty advent calendar to open through January and got a long weekend booked for the end.
Can't bloody wait for that.

I'm doing this too!

RachelCarew · 29/12/2024 21:34

Usual here, including a very busy time at work. I do make sure I get to yoga and my painting class once a week.

Christ0nABike · 29/12/2024 21:38

We’re going away for a weekend with family, but prior to having kids we had a long haul holiday every year late Jan / early Feb. We’re only a couple of years off them leaving school and us being able to do that again, and I can’t chuffin wait!

Whatanidiot123 · 29/12/2024 21:39

I’d like to hibernate but work will be busy and I’m traveling a bit.

I will book a massage, get my nails done and am taking DD to the theatre with friends mid way through.

I also plan to book our holidays for the year, to fill the calendar with things to look forward to.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/12/2024 21:40

I will be thinking about what I want to plant - I;m not a gardener really but I need to repot my beloved climber and buy some seeds

Last few years I planted Sweet Peas and Nastursiums some of which I've kept the seeds from.
Tomatoes - I grew for the first time and impressed myself .

Other than that - some de cluttering and tidying
Holiday booked for April

January is not my favourite month either . I need to plan something nice

terracottacountryfarm · 29/12/2024 21:42

Work will be horrendously busy - dreading it so much. And I'm travelling for work end of January so even more dread to come...

But January is a hugely depressing time for me. Never liked it, always feel January through to march is a really somber and boring time of the year so I fill my days with work and dog walking

Kashmiri24 · 29/12/2024 21:44

I’m going to write in my wellness journal every day, plant some vegetable seeds in the greenhouse, go to see Some Guys Have All The Luck and plan my mum’s 90th birthday party.

Jakadaal · 29/12/2024 21:44

Nag DH to book a holiday for February!! Grin

MysweetAudrina · 29/12/2024 21:49

3 Pages of writing first thing when I wake up. Yoga before work. Parkrun, Sea swim, mountain walk with dogs, breathwork, sound baths. Lots of daily self care practices.

7catsisnotenough · 29/12/2024 21:52

Starting a new 4 day week with Wednesdays off as of Jan 1st. Can't wait, really feel it will give me some balance back in my life!

socks1107 · 30/12/2024 07:41

We have started booking a weekend in Europe for the end of January. Looking fwd to this years a lot! I've no time off over Xmas so I'm looking fwd to it

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 30/12/2024 07:47

I like to get out for walks to up my vit D on bright but cold weekends - they’ve been in short supply this winter, but hopefully we’ll get some next month. I have a January birthday so I usually try and plan something for that with friends so I have something to look forward to. But mostly trying to exercise, batch cook healthy meals etc.

Poisonwood · 30/12/2024 08:10

My daily yoga, meditation and walks. I’d like to try to do morning yoga throughout January as it makes mind and body feel so more energised. Evening yoga is cosy.

We have some significant bills this year so our weekly lunch dates are going to change in January to homemade soup/rolls and thermos of tea and a walk…I’m looking forward to it.

Proteinbananas · 30/12/2024 08:13

Me and DH have a weekend away. I always try and plan something nice because I love Christmas and feel a bit flat after it.

I also book some time off as it makes it easier getting back into work.

FestiveDiscoBall · 30/12/2024 08:13

A week of skiing, big Burns night party, back to routines of hobbies and work, and moan it's dark.

flutterby1 · 30/12/2024 08:34

A panto... some run til early feb.

Crunchymum · 30/12/2024 08:38

Have 2 out of 3 of my kids birthdays in January (and they aren't twins) so we've got a family party planned for one and a shopping trip / girls day out for the other (we'll take a of her few friends)

Have a dinner booked for 11th January with some old friends I've not seen in years.

I'll be working, kids back to school and hobbies / tutoring. We have a few medical appointments in January too (DC3 and myself) so need to fit them in.

I don't mind January really. We have a big clean when the tree comes down, we declutter, we have lots of cosy nights in. We see friends and family, we get back to normality after the madness of Christmas.

foghead · 30/12/2024 09:27

I have the mumsnet favourite of a spa day booked with friends, a wander around London with another friend and a visit to family.

RabbitsRock · 30/12/2024 09:35

You’ve reminded me OP - I need to book a spa day. DH gave me money 2 years ago & I still haven’t done it. There’s an offer on at a local hotel & I would have enough for a nice lunch too.
