I’m looking for ideas for what I can read to DS (11) at bedtime.

He’s currently enjoying Good Omens.

I’m open to anything. Nothing else by Terry Pratchett as DH reads those.

Nothing useful to add except to say I love that you are still reading to your child at bedtime - hope to be doing the same when my DS is 11.

Books we’ve enjoyed recently, or that ds has read on his own:
Boy in the Tower by Polly HoYen
Hunger Games
Who let the Gods out - Maz Evans
Alex Rider books
Wolf brother books
anything by Katherine Rundell if you haven’t read those - start with The Explorer.

We’re reading the Just William books to DS (10). They’ve been a bit of a surprise hit with him.

ArghhWhatNext · 30/12/2024 09:04

Two books that I read to my ds at that age: Smith by Leon Garfield, Cue for Treason by Geoffrey Trease. Both classics, both page-turners.

Thewholeplaceglitters · 30/12/2024 09:06

Eagle of the Ninth was another good one we read last year.
Tom’s Midnight Garden if you haven’t read that yet.
Goodnight Mr Tom but oh my goodness it’s sad.
Kensuke’s Kingdom.

Thewholeplaceglitters · 30/12/2024 09:07

Oh and Are you there God it’s me Margaret….which then got us into a few other Judy Blume’s. Was reading to dd then ds got in on the act & loved them.

NewNameNoelle · 30/12/2024 09:13

The Skandar book series, The Book Thief, Dune, The Hobbit, the Philip Pullman series.

My yr6 wouldn’t want me to read to them sadly but these are books that they have recently read and enjoyed.

Notquitegrownup2 · 30/12/2024 09:41

Seconding Michelle Paver's Wolf Brother series, though please be warned that the first 3 short chapters are not indicative of the whole book. Get through these which seem really gloomy/depressing, sad and a bit shocking and all of a sudden the adventures begin. There are 7 books in the series - we loved them all.

Some great ideas. Thank you.

TBH whilst I enjoyed reading the His Dark Materials trilogy to DS, I’ve rather had enough of fantasy.

Our dc really enjoyed me reading to them the books that they wouldn't have read alone - typically the classics, with their slower starts and complex language. The last books I read to my dc were The Secret Garden and David Copperfield. In Y7 they felt too grown-up to be read to any more.

Xiaoxiong · 30/12/2024 11:34

Just started reading aloud Impossible Creatures to DS11 - he's been reading so much Cherub that I wanted to get him back on a bit of fantasy!

MinnieMountain · 30/12/2024 16:31

@Dilbertian what other classics did you read to your DC?
