If you're mid 40s, what vitamins and supplements do you take?

My socials are full of people listing what they're planning for their "New Year, New Me"

Almost all of them say take my vitamins and supplements daily. I don't take any and feel like I'm definitely an anomaly.

I need to be the doctor about menopause and feel generally shitty and achey - what do you all take and why please?

I'm 40 but felt exhausted earlier this year, turned out my iron, folate and b12 were really low. I took high dose b12 and had a couple of b12 injections and after 3 months my b12 was much better, so I now take well woman once a day multi vitamin and high dose gentle iron and folic acid because I'm still anaemic

HRT, vitamin D in winter, magnesium to help sleep l get restless legs if I miss a dose) and creatine to get the most benefit from my time at the gym. I avoid most supplements especially those marketed for menopause.

This plus B12.

I should take iron as I am veggie. Maybe in 2025.

Lottapianos · 29/12/2024 16:18

Vitamin D3
Magnesium glycinate
And HRT - nothing else will actually increase your depleting hormone levels in perimenopause

I asked my menopause specialist if there was anything else she would recommend taking and she said only Omega 3 so have added that in too

B12 jab every 8 weeks
sertaline
good night sleep

i can do anything then!

FuckMeUpFlorida · 29/12/2024 16:26

I'm on the liquid collagen, which has a very high (over 100%) RDA of vitamin C, Vitamin D and Biotin.

Hoping to help my skin, but side effects help hair, nails and joints so feel I can't be doing a bad thing. I'm horrendous at taking tablets.

Mydogisamassivetwat · 29/12/2024 16:28

Vitamin d3 and K2, quite a high dose and I’m coelic and my blood results always come in on the lower end of normal.

B12.

Thats it.

AspirationalTallskinnylatte · 29/12/2024 16:30

Vitamin D every day from Sept - March
I think it helps me feel less awful and be less prone to colds over the winter.
Iron every now and again if I've had a heavy period and feel tired.

Shufflebumnessie · 29/12/2024 16:34

Calcium & Vitamin D (both as advised by the GP.
HRT (only started a month ago).
Evening Primrose (take in the evening to help with hot flushes/night sweats).
Going to start Magnesium soon to see if it helps me sleep and ease the restless legs that the progesterone tablet part of my HRT seems to exacerbate.

If I take many more I'll rattle when I walk 😅

Harrysmummy246 · 29/12/2024 16:38

Not really very good at remembering anything other than my sertraline but considering a women's multivitamin (must check what's in the general jar that husband is slightly better at remembering to take), and omega 3/6 as I'm being assessed for ADHD (eventually) so it might help my daft brain to cooperate with life. Now to find one of those that is not fishy.

SatsumaCat · 29/12/2024 16:38

Vitamin D and folate at my bloods showed I was too low.

TheStarfire · 29/12/2024 16:40

I'm 41 and take a multivitamin, thiamine, vit d, starflower oil and cod liver oil

Can't say I've noticed any benefits though tbh

username299 · 29/12/2024 16:40

I take:

Probiotic
Multi vitamin
Vitamin D
Iron
Magnesium
B complex

I need to restart my omega 3.

ssd · 29/12/2024 16:43

I take vit d high strength, a multi vitamin to cover the basics, iron yo prevent anemia, and magnesium when i can get hold of it

DottyMilkshake · 29/12/2024 16:43

vit d spray, iron chewables when I remember.

MagickTrick · 29/12/2024 16:45

Iron and vitamin d with an effervescent vitamin c tablet in water. I’m often anaemic due to heavy periods which is why I take iron in ferrous fumerate form.

Spanielsaremad · 29/12/2024 16:56

I don't take any. Never have. Can't say I have any symptoms that I need them for.

DonQ · 29/12/2024 17:07

A perimenopause supplement which includes vitamin D and collagen powder.

ScabbyHorse · 30/12/2024 14:41

I take in winter:

A women's multivitamin called Vitl which has minerals, B vitamins and ashwagandra

Omega 3 fish oil

Vitamin D

Probiotic tablet

Liquid Ginseng if I'm tired

I feel ten times better and haven't got properly ill yet whereas normally I would have had a few colds by now.

Daffodilpup · 30/12/2024 14:49

I take a multivitamin from either Sainsbury’s or Aldi. I’m 45. Should I be taking more? I do lack in energy but would be wary of taking too much with a multi vitamin too?

NorthernGirlie · 31/12/2024 12:58

@Daffodilpup ypure doing better than me! Going to go back through this thread this afternoon and order some of the recommendations

OP posts:
GameOfJones · 31/12/2024 13:05

A general multivitamin with iron (as a blood test showed my Vitamin D was low and I feel the iron helps with my heavy periods.)

Omega 3, fibre and garlic supplements (to help with high cholesterol)

Collagen for joint health

I used to take more (magnesium, turmeric, apple cider vinegar etc) but didn't feel the benefit from them so stopped.

TheOGCCL · 31/12/2024 13:15

Late forties
HRT including testosterone
B12
Iron

MadamePeriwinkle · 31/12/2024 13:21

I'm late forties.

Vitamin D and menopause supplement (as well as HRT) for the last three years. Cardioace recently due to a borderline cholesterol test (on its way down thankfully).

Have just been diagnosed with ADHD so will be making some tweaks - not sure what yet but definitely adding a probiotic.

Proteinbananas · 31/12/2024 13:26

Vitamin d and c..I started taking them after a rubbish winter where I got cold after cold. They really seem to have helped as I've remained mostly cold free since.

I did look at collagen but I'm veggie and I wasn't sure if the veggie alternatives were any good. I also keep debating creatine as I go to the gym a few times a week, it's quite expensive though and it's not like I'm looking to win a body building competition

Autumndayz77 · 31/12/2024 13:29

I take well woman multi vit, omega 3, and creatine. I’ve just ya eyes collagen to see if it helps me look a bit brighter and aid recovery etc.
