Could this be a scam? Total mystery!

This is something really strange that has had me and multiple people scratching our heads. In July 2022, at my old address that I had resided in for over a year, I received this letter. It came with a letter from the DVLA with an application for a new V5. Now you may not think this is sus, however I will outline these points to add context:

  • The address I have blanked out is my address (at the time)
  • "Julie Roberts" does not exist, I have searched extensively
  • No "Julie Roberts" has ever lived at that property, I know the person who owned it prior and lived there for 20 years
  • Was not a neighbour, I knew my neighbours and they didn't have this car nor that name.
  • My house did not have a driveway, none of the houses in the street do
  • I went looking for the car, never found it.
  • The grammar is bizarre, the spelling, yet knowing to write "to whom it may concern"
  • The font
  • It couldn't be a case of typo/wrong address because an even number either side (i.e 46,48) do not exist, plus the postcode does not exist.
The car never was SORN, and hasn't been MOT tested or taxed since. The last logbook was issued on 7th June 2022, but "Julie" claims she bought the car on 24th May 2022 and received no paperwork. Could it be a scam of some description? Has anyone ever heard of this before? I don't understand what is to be gained from it though? It can easily be passed off as a mistake, but the more you consider the other factors the more it seems deliberate. I don't understand why they have supplied my address? Can anyone shed any light?

Weird! Sorry I don’t know what to do about it

Yes scam. Firstly, they spelt ‘Register’ wrong.

Second, why would the DVLA send a personal letter out with an official document? I don’t think they would.

You don’t own the car, so wouldn’t have any documentation.

Is the scam to register the car in their name do it becomes legally theirs? Or cloning it?

This is what I thought! But surely to do that they would have to actually obtain the V5 application form the DVLA enclosed?

It also came with the letter from the DVLA saying that in order to do this, a new application would need to be filled out and sent back.
And I think they sent the personal letter back with everything else just as a courtesy. The whole thing came from the DVLA.

It was legit DVLA. It was the enclosed personal letter that had me confused and still does!

I'm desperately trying to think how this could be a scam. Could it be she needed to show she tried to register the vehicle but didn't want to? So used this letter as proof, but used a fake address as she didn't want to do it really. God knows why...
The thing about the drive, that's just to say the car isn't breaking the law I presume. She doesn't have one either probably. I hope you find out what happened!

Doggymummar · 29/12/2024 12:24

Is it your car registration number?

I’m unable to get beyond the font choice

Hmmm, maybe! But the address has me stumped. There was no car anywhere, none of the houses on the estate even have drive aways, it's all on street parking.

The font choice had me creeped out.

Well it's still off the road so those jobs are taking a while. https://motorscan.co.uk/freecarcheck

Exactly this is what I found interesting. Still off the road but not SORN.

Bought car, didn't tax or insure it, got pulled over by the police, gave a false name and address to them, and then tried to cover their tracks by sending off for a SORN notice in the false name and address.
