Cafe near Northern stretch of the M1

Years ago I asked this question and got a brilliant recommendation for Blacker Hall Farm shop which has become our usual stop off place between my parents and our house. We've been there umpteen times and it's always been a happy break.

Today though we'll hit it at Sunday roast time where all we'll want is a coffee and a cake.

I'm looking for new places to try that are less then 10 minutes drive from the M1 and serve reasonably decent coffee. Clean toilets and something to wander around (little walk, or a playground or a garden centre maybe). Ideal stopping point would be between the start of the M1 at the Northern end and definitely no further south than Nottingham.

There is a garden centre which is about ten mins away from junction 36 called wentworth garden centre which has a large cafe and spectacular selection of cakes.

Galliano · 29/12/2024 08:32

It has a little play area and a pets section with some small furry things

wentworthgardencentre.co.uk

The Potting Shed in Silkstone is nearer to the M1 than Wentworth Garden Centre.

On Google map it says it is 5 minutes from junction 37.

A little further away is Thyme cafe at Cannon Hall garden centre and then up the hill is the cafe at Cannon Hall Farm.

All are excellent as is Wentworth Garden Centre.

If you’ve got NT membership, I like to stop at Hardwick Hall near Chesterfield.

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is just off junction 38. There's 2 entrances and if you just wanted the cafe, you'd need to go in the first one (signposted the Weston, not the main entrance). Here you can go in the cafe, without entering the park, which costs (I think, I don't pay as I get in for free with my Art Pass) about a tenner per adult, but children are free. But it's a nice way to spend a couple of hours if you're happy to pay.

To the east of J39 there's Pugneys, which is a lake you can walk around and there's also a cafe and play area - parking will be £1/2 for an hour or so.

A little further north and depending on exactly where you're going, there's Skelton Lake services just off J45, which is a newish modern services and there's a lakeside walk and play area (I think, no DC so I don't take notice of these things).

RampantIvy · 29/12/2024 08:50

Parking at YSP is very expensive. I also don't rate the cafe at Pugneys. It doesn't compare with the others mentioned on here.

What is the Weston cafe like?

Galliano · 29/12/2024 08:59

It’s free to park just to go to the Weston but you can’t get into the sculpture park if you take this option. The Weston is nice but very much not aimed at children.

id still stick with wentworth of these choices if nice cake was high priority

Parking at the YSP is free. You need to pay for adults to enter the park via the main entrance, but you can park outside the Weston and visit the cafe at that end for free. The food at YSP is good but they are often busy at peak times.

I've never eaten at Pugneys but it otherwise fits the OPs brief of somewhere to run around/use a play area. An alternative would be to pick up food at the garage (Greggs, Starbucks, convenience store) on the way past and just have a walk at Pugneys.

Redhotchllisteppa · 29/12/2024 09:03

If your children are 7 or under car gate garden centre just off junction 41 of the M1 has a small soft play area and a cafe.

Skelton Lake services a jit further up has an outdoor play area and a walk around the lake but only has starbucks for coffee and cake

Edited

I've walked in the Wentworth are a few times, but the garden centre and cafe at the weekend is beyond rammed, especially if the weather is nice. You have to be prepared to queue and they're very slow.

If you can hold on till past Leeds, then the A1 (M) goes near Wetherby - which has a nice river walk, playgrounds and lots of cafes in there. It's just off the A1 (M)

TeaandHobnobs · 29/12/2024 09:07

Oh yes @cakeorwine, we had a nice stop off at Wetherby 👍🏻

Thank you. It used to be that you paid a lot for parking but entry was free.

Blacker Hall Farm has a semi-outside section now so you won't be affected by Sunday lunches if you still want to call there.

You could also try Pot House Hamlet in Silkstone which is just off J37. Nice cafe and a few little shops, some animals to feed if you want a little walk. Very nice village.

I agree that Wentworth garden centre is your best bet.

They have a play area that is free but also a family farm for a few pound entry. There is currently an ice rink as part of their Christmas events.

They have a full restaurant as well as a cafe but there is also the new courtyard outdoor area that gas covered seating

I'll raise you - Cannon Hall 😁

It's a bit of a trek from the motorway although also an excellent choice.

The farm bit is super expensive these days though.

Wentworth will be completely rammed and you always have to wait ages to queue through the cafe. When we go I always take a picnic because the cafe is so full that we all get too hungry waiting. It is a nice place to stop but not at lunch time.

Was reasonably quiet on Friday!

LegoInfestation · 29/12/2024 10:29

Thanks everyone!

Glad to add quite a few good sounding options to the list. They all sound like just what we're looking for and I reckon we'll try the all out eventually as this is a journey we do multiple times a year.

I should have gone! I love a wander round.

RampantIvy · 29/12/2024 10:52

I think the nearest will be Pot House Hamlet. It is 5 minutes from junction 37 just off the A628. The name of the cafe is The Potting Shed.
