It’s that time of year again!
If you need a detox, to lose weight, to be healthier, to undo some seasonal overindulgence, to sleep better, to look better, to have healthier skin, to save money, boost liver function, improve your memory, or to decrease your likelihood of dying earlier of various nasty illnesses (sorry for the sudden hard ball!) then you’ve come to the right place!

The MN DJ2025 Chat thread is for anyone who wants to reset their relationship with alcohol; whether you’re a weekend tippler or a problem heavier drinker.
This is a friendly, non-judgmental thread where we support and encourage each other, exchange ideas and information, share alcohol-free drinks recommendations etc.

Hopefully we’ll have some fun along the way. Please hop aboard the good ship DJ 2025, everyone welcome!

Just quickly, before the Traitors starts - I am very happy to report that the Martini no alcohol Aperitivo is very good! I really like it Grin. Am having with ice, tonic and a slice of lime in a huge wine glass. It's honestly so nice - you'd have to be the type of person who likes a regular Martini or Aperol Spritz to enjoy it I guess.

Welcome onboard new comers and of course you should stay right here @Bookaholic73 ! There's strength in numbers. Big group hug!

Gizmosgremlins · 10/01/2025 21:02

Well done all...I'm sitting here with a mug of mint tea feeling rather proud of myself.

Waffle19 · 10/01/2025 21:08

@LindorDoubleChoc ooh I might give that a go. I’m definitely finding having a good selection of non alcoholic drinks helping, I think I just like having a drink in my hand

In bed… another day ticked off. Not the best Friday night, but I’m glad I’m sober and proud that I’ve got this far.

MistletoeAndWine123 · 10/01/2025 21:37

Off to bed now, another Friday done. Friday is normally straight to the shop to buy two bottles of wine after work so I'm super proud that I've not been tempted. Looking forward to waking up with a nice clear head and being ready to take on the day tomorrow. Great job everyone x

Fundays12 · 10/01/2025 23:45

Day 13 done for me. Me and DH went for a meal but I drove (neither of us were drinking over dinner then went to the cinema. We were home just after 11. DH poured himself a whisky (I can't stand the stuff so it doesn't tempt me at all). I headed of to bed as one of the dcs has a party tomorrow morning.

pollyannaperspective · 11/01/2025 06:00

Still AF but Friday has been a personally exceptionally sad day. It will, though, keep me focused but I may be posting less.
Hope the weekend goes steadily for all.

suki1964 · 11/01/2025 06:29

@pollyannaperspective - ((((((hugs))))))

So 9 days for me now. Yesterday I was thinking all day - will I go take a drink tonight? I started to think that I would just do Monday to Friday drink free and have a drink at the weekends. All day long that thought kept popping into my head. However it didnt start me craving.

We have a fully stocked bar - proper bar - every drink you could think of in what was a garage so I dont even have to think about jumping in a car and going to a shop or going to the pub, its here, on tap, our own bar

Ive not stepped foot it in since New Years day

After dinner last night I really fancied a cigarette ( I have the odd one now and again ) so stepped outside and it was baltic so went into the "bar" , to stand in the doorway, and I thought to myself, I could just knock back a shot and no one would be any the wiser......

Im so pleased that it was just a fleeting thought and I walked back into the house

Was so tired I was in bed for 11:30 and slept right through to 4:30 so sleep is definitely improving

I think ( well tbh I know ) what I was doing before, was drinking late into the night just to keep going. Eyes would be hanging out of my head, but I needed me time , that time when you dont have to talk to anyone, doom scroll, shop online, watch a tv programme that no one else wants to watch . Now half the early part of the evening isnt taken up by drinking, I have time for those things so I can allow myself to drop off

So now Im away to fatties for a weigh in , something else I have to keep a tight reign on, my weight. Hopefully a week without drink is going to show on the scales, if it does its something else in my armoury

newme2025 · 11/01/2025 08:17

Had a bit of a fitful sleep last night - my fault as I needed the loo but couldn’t be bothered to get up, so kept drifting in and out of sleep. I don’t want to get up this morning but I think it’s the cold more than anything.

Majorityofthree23 · 11/01/2025 08:31

Still going strong but evenings do seem to drag without a glass of wine... need to find more to do. DH opened a bottle for himself, it was corked, so he decided that was a sign and had a cup of tea.

thisoldcity · 11/01/2025 08:35

Just checking in to say I did okay and I'm pleased to say dh is also doing okay with his DJ. My grown up ds mentioned yesterday that he and his girlfriend are also doing DJ, which I was pleased about. It's a good start to the year and I'm hoping I'll have the lasting benefit of re-setting my relationship with alcohol as having it as an occasional treat.

newme2025 · 11/01/2025 09:55

Two big milestones I’m looking forward to next week (if I make it through the weekend!)

1 We’ll have done two whole weeks of DJ by bedtime on Tuesday.

2 We’ll be halfway through DJ by midday on Thursday.

TalkingPoint55 · 11/01/2025 10:25

Hi everyone,

Just joining. I'm doing DJ but only started on 6 (when the holidays ended - seemed like the reset point generally). I've been lurking for a few days and this thread is great - it's good to feel there's a virtual community out there sharing in the process.

I've been drinking too much for literally decades... For escape, to counter the occasional boredom of having little kids (don't shoot me down - everyone knows what I mean), because I love it... But increasingly have been feeling guilty, worried about my long term health, pathetic for being dependent, ashamed of myself, and aware that I'm setting a terrible example for my children who are now old enough to notice and comment. I've been experiencing racing heart at night, sore guts (liver?), feeling sick, and I know it's just ridiculous to do that to myself.

My husband is just as bad and we know that we encourage our mutual bad habits. Most of our drinking is at home, wearing pyjamas, just habitual. I find it much easier not to have anything at all, than to stop after only one glass. Once I've had three, I lose all control.

I've been using an app counter for around 4 months and the results are, erm, sobering. Typically 25 or so units/week, way more in December. I've tried DJ before and only lasted until the 11th 🙈 This time I'm determined to do it and my husband is in too- we need to do this together. There's loads of leftover bottle from Xmas but I've put them all in the attic!

I know some won't approve of this as a goal, but we have an event on 8 Feb which is the target, and I will be drinking on that occasion. But I'm hoping generally for DJ to be a complete habit reset, a break for my liver, and a mental/emotional challenge. I don't think I've gone more than 5 days without booze in my adult life, except when pregnant or in countries where it was unobtainable. I don't think I want to be teetotal long term but if I could be happy with 'only' sharing two bottles of wine/week with hubby (so around 10 units each), I'd feel ok with that. If I can't stick with it I'll need to reconsider.

I was worried about last night- the first weekend night of DJ, and usually we don't fail to crack a beer followed by a bottle (or more). But I had some ginger beer and rhubarb fizz left over from Xmas and it felt surprisingly ok to stick with that, I think I have a very positive mindset towards DJ right now. Like others I definitely experience that blood sugar low around 6 when I'm hungry and start cooking, so deliberately heading that off with a sweet drink seems like a win in comparison. This morning I've woken up with a headache which is quite annoying! Maybe it's the toxins coming out...

In case this is helpful to others, I've collected all the recommendations made previously during the thread about helpful books etc and AF drinks.

Good luck everyone, we can do it 💪💪💪

Good Morning everyone; and a special hi to @TalkingPoint55 and many thanks so much for the AF subs, books, podcasts and site recommendations; much appreciated!
Day 10 for me. Thanks to those who've said that their trigger for wine is when the meal prep begins, that's when the strong urge for wine is there, in my case, the most. I've learned that if I can get past that, ( because there's no wine in the house) then I'm okay as I really don't crave it during or after the meal. The only exception being when sitting at someone else's table for a meal and it's readily available. Anyway, no wine in the house since NYD, and yes, I find myself distracted, tired and impatient as I hurry through the meal prep. Still hanging in there though!

newme2025 · 11/01/2025 13:09

Struggling today. Just want to relax with a glass of wine!

Struggling today. Just want to relax with a glass of wine!

Me too!

Another one that has been lurking and cheering you all on quietly. Day 20 for me, as got the lurgy just before Xmas and couldn’t even think about alcohol up until a few days ago, but now it’s hit and it’s cold and it’s Saturday and I have visions of myself tonight relaxing and savouring a lovely glass of red…

Of course that’s not what will really happen - I’ll do the bottle, crash, wake up dry mouthed, dehydrated and hate myself for again having no self control, which is why I refuse to succumb and instead will treat myself to a packet of fancy biscuits and a big bag of crisps! This is a real treat for me, ironically I am very self controlled when it comes to eating well and exercise just can’t master the same when it comes to alcohol.

So I’ll be reading and following along tonight and hanging on in there for another weekend!

IGuessIllbetheFirst · 11/01/2025 14:07

Day 13 for me and I’m hanging on in. I’m embarrassed to say but I usually clock-watch on Saturday’s and have discussions with myself over when is the earliest time I can possibly justify to have a glass of wine - after 3 must be ok, its the weekend I deserve it etc. Not great.

I think I got into really bad habits during covid and I am only realising now it has turned into a dependency. I haven’t been binge drinking, more like having a regular supply of alcohol at the weekend/many evenings to keep me going, stop me thinking maybe. I am not yet tempted but I do feel restless & out of sorts, like I don’t really know what to do with myself.

newme2025 · 11/01/2025 14:32

I’m trying to busy myself doing a big household tidy, as the house is still a tip after Christmas. I’ve also eaten almost an entire packet of biscuits, which can’t be healthy. Almost looking forward to Monday just because it’s easier not to drink!

LindorDoubleChoc · 11/01/2025 15:38

Hello all. It's gloriously sunny and bright here today - we've been out for lunch for DD's birthday, and even zone 2 London is looking beautiful in the sunshine.

It was a cafe lunch as her big celebrations are tonight (she's in her early 20s so going out with her boyfriend and a big group of friends) so I wouldn't have had an alcoholic drink anyway. I very rarely drink at lunch time - only if it's a special occasion. Infact, like so many of us on this thread, I rarely drink outside the hours of 6pm to 8pm but unfortunately it's perfectly possible to get through quite a few units in those two hours per day!

Meal prep is a deadly trigger it seems. I wish there was some easy way to get through it. All I can think of at the moment is having a personal chef so I never have to do the boring donkey work of cooking - that's my idea of absolute heaven. I'm sure I could happily be teetotal in those circumstances.

TeaRose29 · 11/01/2025 16:56

@Addictforanex you are right that some AF drinks are complex, with exotic ingredients, and are difficult to make, which is an argument used to justify the price (Sentia refers to its "patent-pending botanical technology"). They also miss out on the economies of scale that the big alcohol producers enjoy.

My husband's constant gripe is that much of the cost of alcohol is the duty levied by the government, and this doesn't apply to AF drinks. In addition, alcoholic drinks are subject to VAT at 20%, whereas AF drinks only attract 5%, which makes me think that some AF producers must be making an absolute killing.
He nearly fainted when I told him that the Oddbird cost £9 a bottle.

I don't think I would pay £9 for a glass of AF fizz in a restaurant either! I'd probably just have sparkling water, although they often charge £4 for a bottle of that, even though they've just filled it up round the back with the Sodastream! 😊.

@LindorDoubleChoc many thanks for the feedback on the Martini Aperitivo. I really like the Floreante, so will give this one a go as well. I honestly can't really taste the difference between it and "proper" Martini. It's got the same distinctive, herby taste.

newme2025 · 11/01/2025 17:30

Just trying to hang in there after some pretty bad cravings today…

Fancytrike · 11/01/2025 17:41

@newme2025 you need a distraction! Do a job you’ve been putting off, something to take your mind off it.

thanks very much @TalkingPoint55 for the AF drinks list. Am shopping tomorrow and lots on there to try.

Bumbling along ok here. Seem to have so much time, and also to be very tired! So am going with it, early nights and lie ins are the order of the month. Might download the book ‘Wintering’, a few people have recommended.

have an AF Aldi cider tonight, nothing else - will be asleep by 9…

Yes I can't believe the price of non-alcoholic drinks , especially the gin substitute ones!
I've only tried NoSecco and think it's absolutely rank! Started making my own concoctions last year using various Polish cordials and things like pomegranate liqueur.
Last night I had my usual lime soda with good dash of PLJ lemon, 2 drops of Angostura bitters and 10 drops of Lemon Balm tincture. Absolutely lovely! And no saccharine. Yes the bitters and tincture do contain alcohol but I think 10 drops in a huge wine glass is tiny.

The Lemon Balm is supposed to have calming effects and it definitely made me sleepy!

AlertCat · 11/01/2025 18:44

Feeling very sad here- I made an expensive mistake, and while there shouldn’t be long term effects, I really couldn’t afford the financial cost at the moment- so many other claims on the money. But my own stupid fault.
And then I broke my favourite glass- again, through carelessness.

I don’t think wine would help, I would end up feeling like a failure on top of feeling stupid, but it’s horrible feeling the feelings. I really sympathise with all of us, and our younger selves, who chose/choose to numb them instead!

Bookaholic73 · 11/01/2025 19:03

Thank his for 2 night shifts in a row. I definitely would have caved this weekend else!
It’s been a very stressful few shifts, so I’m already anticipating cravings tomorrow night when I get home.
So luckily I have plenty of time to come up with a game plan. Distraction, AF drinks etc.
