Ideas of how to move down south

DM lives up north, rest of the family down south. She wants to move down, but house is only worth £140k. It seems pretty impossible to move down here. Any ideas on how she could? You couldn't even get a flat in the roughest town for that price.

Obviously depends on where ' down south ' and her expectations of property . She could rent and use the proceeds of the house sale until that runs out and have her name down for a council place ( once funds are getting low , although I don't know if that's feasible )

There's retirement apartments under £140k in Ashford, Kent. The payoff is a service charge and I'm not sure how much that is. The two blocks where I'm aware of properties at £110k and £115k area Hoxton House and Windsor Court. Both in quite decent areas and near to bus routes, shops, GPs etc. About 10 mins from the station.

Retirement flats can be cheaper.

I dont know if shared ownership a possibility

Or a park home.

I live ‘down south’ and you could get a flat for 140. Not every place is the same.

Does your mum still work? What kind of property does she want? Could all of you add to the pot so she can get a property?

catndogslife · 28/12/2024 17:13

If DM is over 55, then retirement type properties for that age-group are a possibility.

My Mum has same issue but lives abroad.

Would shared ownership be a possibility? She would still have to pay rent on the part she didn't own though.

"Down south" is a large and diverse area. Can you be more specific?

Oxford will be more £ than Redruth for example!

Where 'Down south' OP? Which rough area/county are you referring to???

kaos2 · 28/12/2024 17:18

I've just sold a very nice one bed flat in Horsham / West Sussex , right in the town centre for £155k .. it's possible ..

slightlydistrac · 28/12/2024 17:29

'Down south' where? Which counties are you thinking of?

DM is 64, DSD is 66 I think. We live in Kent and they would like to be local to grandchildren. They both work, her in a care home, him as a caretaker. Not sure they'd like an apartment as they have a semi detached house now. The curse of moving north, you can rarely come back south!
