Which style of wine glass do you prefer?

DP thinks that chunky, cut-glass wine glasses are best - "classier" is one word that has been used.

I prefer nice simple glasses, not too thin and fragile, but definitely no fancy engraving. The chunky ones make me think of medieval banquets with Brian Blessed chewing on a large chunk of pig. Or Boycey and Marlene from Only Fools and Horses.

Who's right? (Well, obviously I am, but what does the majority here think?)

I Iove zaltos but I’m having a break from them because I smashed my favourite glass and they’re about £50 a pop and if someone like 67 Pall Mall books out the entire production line you can be waiting months for a replacement. But once you’ve tried one nothing else compares.

The best are the Spiegelau universals for red or white and the Lehmann champagne glasses. They are thin but cheap enough that if you break them it’s not a headache (something like £25 for 4, maybe more now) and they are easy to get hold of.

The worst are those clunky Ikea ones.

I don't like a long stem, makes it too hard to manoeuvre

We have a set of cut glasses, they are used for port mainly but I used them for red wine before. They are beautiful when they catch the light.
We bought them in Prague 20 years ago, real Boehmia crystal.

For white and red I have my plain, very thin and fragile ones. Same with sparkling wine.

I even have some Römer wine glasses, inherited from my parents and at one point I will get my PIL ones (unless they break them)

I like the cut glass more as I get older, especially for sherry, port etc.
What I really hate are a) huge wine glasses, for want of a better word I think they are vulgar, tacky and already starting to date.
b) very thin glass with tall stems - just hazardous!
and c) a+b - naff and dangerous.

WorriedRelative · 28/12/2024 09:36

Proper cut glass isn't chunky, it is fine and delicate. That glass posted doesn't look like proper cut glass, more like a cheap copy.

Drinking from lovely cut glass is a pleasure, especially brandy or champagne, though for wine I prefer an oversize glass.

Medieval banquets wouldn't have had glassware they would have used goblets made from pottery or pewter.

I do like crystal glasses on a formal table setting, but then clean clear glass wear looks lovely too so long as there are no smears.

I have a huge selection of wine glass from very old cut crystal, a lot inherited some everyday cheaper ones, some beautiful very expensive plain a set of red/white/ champagne/Sherry these were a wedding anniversary gift. I have this year gone menopausal according to my DD and bought some rather tacky Christmas ones and I love them !

I don’t like thick chunky glass that’s my one big hate anything else goes, I hate chunky mugs too just hate drinking from thick pottery cheap mugs.

Dainty small ones

I know what I don't like,

  • stupid 'footless' glass - how are you supposed to go to the loo when you have to hold the thing all the time?
  • then's those with 'a belly' - where you have to lean so far back to get the last bit you fall off your chair.
  • so it just leaves the BIG glass.

How does your white stay cool?
The point of a stem is to hold that, not the bowl of the glass, otherwise hand heat warms the wine.

I don’t hold my glass for the duration of my drink. It gets put down between mouthfuls. I also don’t put a lot in at once.

Turquoisetinsel · 28/12/2024 18:10

A mug 😃Wine glasses and all other glasses have really annoyed me this Christmas. Getting them sparkly/ washing them by hand/ fitting them in the dishwasher/ accidentally smashing them. I’m just over them.

SnoopySantaPaws · 28/12/2024 18:20

Hate stemless
hate heavy glasses

tall, thin stem, and nice shape glass not like the one in the OP.

but if push comes to shove, any container!!

Spent Christmas at a friends & was given a picnic, plastic tumbler (coloured ones) with bucks fizz, because they couldn't be arsed getting out proper glasses 🤣🤣

Oblomov24 · 28/12/2024 18:56

I'm not keen on the old fashioned one on left.

SisterMaryLuke · 28/12/2024 19:35

For the longest time, I preferred a very simple, plain glass, but then I found some cut lead crystal glasses and I love them. I still prefer plain for champagne, but I cannot get on board with stemless glasses.

BillieJ · 28/12/2024 19:46

Out of the two, the plain, but I wouldn't object to either, so long as they're not too chunky. Like some other pp, I prefer stemless or very short stem now, as they don't break so easily and fit in the dishwasher more easily.
