A beautiful, if unusual spider picture (obviously there is photos of said spider in post)

This is Hermes. Hermes is a mature adult jumping spider. It is also a very unusual jumping spider. It is half female and half male.

The left side displays the small pedipalps (like a front leg) and a pinky purple chelicerae (fangs) which is a traditional colour for females.

The right side has a large boxing glove style pedipalp, and greeny blue chelicerae, traditionally found in males

This beautiful spiders is owned by MM Invertebrates. I had permission by them to post this.

I just thought it was such a beautiful looking spider that other people might want to see

Hermes is a fine creature - looks as though s/he's watching through a pair of binoculars in the first photo!

Has there been another like Hermes called Janus, by any chance?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 27/12/2024 19:56

Beautiful.
I love jumping spiders. They are so pretty. Spider paws are especially cute.

MaggieBsBoat · 27/12/2024 19:57

How beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing.

FindingMeno · 27/12/2024 19:57

What a cutie!

MrsSethGecko · 27/12/2024 19:58

I do love spiders. So perfectly designed, as it were.

isthismylifenow · 27/12/2024 20:00

Hermes is very cute. And photogenic.

ShodAndShadySenators · 27/12/2024 20:01

Is it just me, or does this spider have a "baffled by the world" expression? Grin
It seems bizarre that it can be half and half like that. Nature is full of surprises!

Im not sure tbh. This is the very first one I’ve ever seen so maybe there has but I just didn’t get to see it

That's amazing. I remember seeing a picture of a gynandromorph tarantula - some sort of Lampropelma. Nature is awesome!

Justleaveitblankthen · 27/12/2024 20:07

Wow 😍 Thanks for posting.
One of the many reasons I won't watch that Celebrity Jungle rubbish.
Horrendous how it's OK to terrify creatures like these, so that the celebrity creatures can earn a paycheck 😠

AutoP1lot · 27/12/2024 20:09

Ooh! I'm a selective arachnophobe but that's pretty 😍

Soubriquet · 27/12/2024 20:12

Jumping spiders are ridiculously cute anyway! They have so much expression in their eyes and are so inquisitive

Anyone else watch those silly videos of jumping spiders online? Bea and Panda and Trinket's Nature Show?

Bloody adorable.

Soubriquet · 27/12/2024 20:16

I quite like this video. It’s peacock jumping spiders rather than the ones we have but it’s still cute. You can’t own these outside of Australia though. I would love one

Cutie. Looks like a tiny Muppet.

Rowgtfc72 · 28/12/2024 05:14

Actually very cute. Looked like it should be wearing converse and a backward baseball cap for some reason!
I am terrified of spiders, All I saw of the words was ' jumping'.

Missionimprobable · 28/12/2024 07:19

Thanks for sharing the beautiful photo of Hermes, I didn't even know there was such a thing as jumping spiders, I'm off to Google it.
I've always had a phobia about spiders, don't kill them but used to put them outside.
I once read on MN:
What if a house spider thinks of you as family, he's doing his bit by keeping insects at bay while you provide his shelter.
Silly I know, it made me smile so now we just live in peace together 😀

PortiaFimbriata · 28/12/2024 08:21

I love jumping spiders. But people who are on the fence about my namesake probably shouldn't google my namesake: they're not all cute.

I hope Hermes is Ok, the different legs look tricky to manage. This butterfly with the same condition is cute though.

Lovely - I love jumping spiders.

Soubriquet · 28/12/2024 10:29

I think it will be ok because it’s now a mature adult. It’s gone through several moulting phases

Yes, I was thinking he/she/it has a very confused expression.

Cute as anything though.

Yes we do have a few native species of jumping spiders in the Uk. Zebra jumping spiders are one of them. They are usually a lot smaller than the phippius regius which most people keep as they are bigger

I just googled them - what an interesting species! Especially how they can learn to adapt their hunting techniques.
