Do you redecorate your tree for New Year?

I had vague memories of people doing this for the millennium and MIL mentioned it in passing just the other day brining it back into my mind. Google tells me it originated in Russia after the revolution. Of this people who keep their trees up for NY do you redecorate it?

If I’ve been going back to work on the 2nd Jan I have denuded the tree but kept the lights on for NYE so I had less to take down on NYD but have never redecorated it before.

No never. I take mine down usually on 1st or 2nd Jan and don't bother redecorating for NYE. Never heard of anyone else doing it either.

Lightswitchup · 27/12/2024 17:37

I’ve never heard of that or of anyone doing it.

Cattenberg · 27/12/2024 17:39

I remember Y2K party decorations and souvenirs in the shops back in 1999, but didn’t know of anyone re-decorating their Christmas tree for NYE. I was only 18 though.

Mines already down.

TotallyTwisted · 27/12/2024 17:40

I've never heard of this. But our potted tree has to go back outside soon so I was contemplating putting the artificial tree up until Twelfth Night. I'm probably too lazy to actually do it though!

reluctantbrit · 27/12/2024 17:42

I never heard of this.

Ours stays until the 6th-ish, it always depends on the weekend our council collects real trees.

PermanentTemporary · 27/12/2024 17:43

Do I what now?

No....

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 27/12/2024 17:44

Never heard of that. Tree has already been taken down.

IrisApfel · 27/12/2024 17:48

Not completely redecorated but on the years we have party I take off the more Christmassy ornaments, leave the more sparkly ones and add mini disco balls etc.

One of my DC has a birthday before Christmas and I always make sure we have a tree in time for it then just put the lights on and cut their age out of coloured card and use birthday banners to decorate the tree for that, it stays up for a couple of days then we convert to Christmas mode.

Thewrongdoor · 27/12/2024 17:50

No, New Year is still the middle of the Christmas 12 Days. Russians celebrate Christmas Day on January 6th -Russian Orthodox. Maybe that’s where the confusion has arisen.

coodawoodashooda · 27/12/2024 17:51

Not a fkng chance.

EmeraldDreams73 · 27/12/2024 17:52

Nope, ours goes up mid December normally (was late this year though) and stays up till twelfth night in all its glory. Never heard of anyone redecorating it for NY.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/12/2024 17:53

I genuinely cannot think of a single thing I am less likely to do, no.

Topseyt123 · 27/12/2024 17:55

No. I've never heard of this and wouldn't do it anyway.

I usually take our tree down at New Year, not redecorate it. Bollocks to that!

Why does it need to go back outside?

But no, tree will remain as is until the 5th prob.

WalterdelaMare · 27/12/2024 17:56

Eh? No.

Doggymummar · 27/12/2024 18:00

Across the road redecorates outside frequently. Never been inside so not sure if she does the inside too. They are Scandinavian and Jewish but also had Christmas decor. A couple of days ago the Jewish decoration went up and the overtly Christmas Santas and reindeers came down I shall see what happens for New year. She had wreaths for all epseasons and an outside table with different arrangements, it's lovely.

DreamW3aver · 27/12/2024 18:07

It certainly wasn't something I remember anyone doing for the millennium or have heard of at any other rime

The pp says it is a potted tree, so presumably alive and kicking from one year to the next. Trees in pots can cope with being indoors for a few days, but now it needs to be outside again.

I’m just surprised it’s that short a time, unless it’s been in for the whole of December.

We had a second tree this year which is a potted tree. I’m just wondering if I should put it back outside. I’ve just been watering it. And it’s not an overly warm position. The other tree is real but not potted.

DappledThings · 27/12/2024 18:51

No. New Year's Day is still within Christmas so why would I decorate it for a different festival when it's still only the day the maids come a-milking.

GroovyChick87 · 27/12/2024 18:55

No. I like it left up for NYE but I take it down usually on the 3rd

Moveoverdarlin · 27/12/2024 18:56

I’ve never heard of anyone taking their tree down before NYE and never heard of anyone redecorating it.

RosesAndHellebores · 27/12/2024 18:59

Nope. And my grandfather was Russian and we celebrated again on 6th January. I had infants at the millennium and have nonrecollection of this!

Heidi2018 · 27/12/2024 19:02

Nope, never heard of anyone doing it. We keep the christmas tree up until after little Christmas on the 6th.
