Too old to drink (and deal with hangovers)

This year I have cut down on drinking massively, mainly alcohol free at home and have switched to 1 or glasses when I do drink.
I cut down for lots of reasons (health cost, weight and hangovers). This Christmas Day, I drank throughout the afternoon and evening, mixed with soft drinks. Probably equated to 1 bottle and wine and a G&T , with plenty of food between 2pm and 1am. I had the most vile hangover yesterday and I am still battling a headache and nausea today. I am really really annoyed with myself as I just want to curl up in bed rather than spend time with the family. I cut short a visit yesterday as the noise of people chatting and playing games was too much for my head).
This has reaffirmed that I am just going to have to sack alcohol off. Forever! I am 47.

I've massively cut down over the last couple of years (and I wasn't a big drinker to start with). DH has pretty much stopped completely. Can't be bothered with poor sleep or hangovers, and we out on weight far too easily so alcohol just seem not worth the calories.

For some reason I got three bottles of gin and one of Baileys for Christmas?! Not sure how I have this reputation. I've never owned a bottle of Baileys in my life before this, though I like it well enough I suppose. This stash will last me all year, at least.

Yep, I'm 51 and have slowed my drinking right down. Hardly had a gin and tonic over the summer and I used to have a small one most nights after getting in from work.

A couple of years back if I opened a bottle of wine to have one glass with dinner I'd easily say yes to a top up. Now I have to really be in the mood to have some in the first place, never mind another glass or two.

It just seems to really affect me these days as if my body suddenly recognises it as a toxin straight away and goes "woooahh, no thanks". Makes my skin flush and dry out and I end up with rosacea, looking grey and unhealthy, I feel sluggish and lazy next day, and dehydrated, even with small amounts.

I'm the same. I find that if I have really nice soft drinks then I don't really miss the alcohol as much as I thought I would.

Thanks for all your replies! It seems I am not alone. My hangover actually turned into a migraine and I have been in Bed for 24hours in the dark, earplugs in, eye mask on. What a waste!
Have taken some migraine relief and migraleve and am now able to look at my phone without feeling 🤢 whoop. Lesson learned.
I also received lots of alcohol related presents (liqueur chocolates, gin set, some “naice” wines. Looks like these will keep me for several years.

Yes! I gave up drinking at 37 as the cons outweighed the pros.

It can be challenging socially, at Christmas etc but overall I rarely miss it!

Im 51 and ive cut down. I used to come home on a friday after work, shower, pizza in the oven and 1/2 a bottle of. Felt shite the next morning. Then finishe the bottle on a Saturday, then open another and finish it on Sunday. Every weekend. Not much to many perhaps .

last month i went to a Christmas market with a friend and drank 2 glasses of wines and half a bottle of prosecco Hardly ate, then came home and I was embarrassingly sick in the toilet. Hadn’t done that In 25 yrs.

so ive not had wine on a Friday since that. Had 2 small glasses of wine on Christmas Eve (over 4 hours) and 2 last. And lots of food which made a difference.

but it was just habit. And im sick of it. No im done now. No more. Wont say im gonna be teetotal but im tired of it.

went out with work few weeks ago (younger folk) and tgey were drinking shots. WTF for? Made me realise im done with works do too.

Same age and I realised i flush after drinking. That alcohol glow!
