It's a food one, turkey left out

I've arrived at my brother's for evening food and they cooked an enormous turkey yesterday and there's tons left so they're having it as part of tonight's food. Thing is it was out and covered over night as it wouldn't fit in their fridge. So usually I'm the type just eat it but I don't know ? He says most people did this year's ago and it'll be fine.

No room in the fridge so ours was always left out. For days.

Bustopnumberone · 26/12/2024 19:42

I wouldn’t want to eat meat that’s been left out at room temperature for over a day…

If the heating isn't on overnight I'd eat it. I've eaten 2 day old pizza and survived before.

One reason I’ve never had one 🤢They make me feel queasy just looking at them.

Seaweed42 · 26/12/2024 19:44

Ours is left out too. My mother always left the turkey out too. But it's in a cold utility room with the heat turned off.

Wendysfriend · 26/12/2024 19:45

I don't know what to do, I'm never usually concerned. He said he will heat it if I prefer, not sure that'll make a difference. I do remember as a child the turkey on the side for days.

I’m assuming there’s other food with it? Is it a buffet? I would definitely give the turkey a miss personally but sure it wouldn’t bother some.

PiperLeo · 26/12/2024 19:48

I made turkey curry with mine this evening. It has been sitting out covered since yesterday afternoon. It was lovely and none of us seem to have food poisoning so all is good.

WeeOrcadian · 26/12/2024 19:49

Left.out and covered? Wouldn't bother me at all. Our kitchen is freezing and we haven't put any of yesterday's food in the fridge as there's no space

Edited

It's a sit down meal and they're platers, he knows I'm a bit unsure, could give it a miss but there's 7 of us visiting him 🫣 it'll look bad us all refusing meat.

People did it in the past 🙄

Houses had no central heating - the outer rooms were often very cold

Winters were actually colder and houses were colder, too

HippeePrincess · 26/12/2024 19:53

My grandparents used to leave the turkey in the porch (basically outside) and my parents would use their garage as a sort of fridge for the ham and turkey etc but it was almost as cold as outside. No one’s kitchen is cool enough for my liking to be eating anything that should be refrigerated but has been left out overnight 🤢

WineandCheeseYesPlease · 26/12/2024 19:53

I wouldn’t. Chances are you’d be fine, but if you do end up with food poisoning for the sake of some leftover turkey, you probably won’t think it was worth it!

Same here. It’s been quite mild where we are lately and my kitchen definitely isn’t freezing or anywhere near as cool as a fridge is!

My mother in law always left hers on the side for days and days - not in the fridge. It would be eaten in sandwiches, risotto, curry. No one ever got ill in the years that we went there for Christmas dinner. Her Christmas dinner was shit though - the most basic and bland ever. So glad that I do my own cooking now!

Wendysfriend · 26/12/2024 20:00

Ok so they had planned to serve it cold with different salads , he said he'll heat it, would that make a difference?

Think I'd rather eat out cold with mayo or coleslaw on it. Yum. I don't think I've ever eaten warm turkey lol

i think that’s a worse idea if I’m honest. If it doesn’t get heated properly the bacteria will grow rapidly. If the kitchen is cold it’s safer eating it cold. All though personally I wouldn’t eat it at all.

Bustopnumberone · 26/12/2024 20:06

I think it’s bothering you so just don’t. (The others may be fine with eating it). I’d not make a fuss and just subtly not eat it!

Wendysfriend · 26/12/2024 20:07

Thank you everyone for your replies, they're sitting down now so we'll have to head in , I'm still a bit 🤔 bloody meat , it's such a minefield at times. Thanks again

I just simply wouldn't eat it
Others hygiene around food varies so wildly I'd not risk it tbh

buttonousmaximous · 26/12/2024 20:58

I wouldn't eat it but you will probably be ok.
Mil use to do a Boxing Day buffet everything stayed out for days it was rank
