Dog attacked me

I’m home for a few days for Christmas and was out for a walk with my DM. We were walking our dog in the local village and a bulldog type dog burst its way out of a loose gate and tried to attack our dog. I grabbed our dog and got her to the car, which luckily we’d parked literally 20 feet away.

Meanwhile the dog continued to attempt to attack my DM who was attempting to prevent it from running onto the busy main road. I then ran back over to help by which point the owner appeared. He couldn’t get hold of the dog which continued to jump up growling at my DM. He was on a phone call which was seemingly more important than stopping his dog from behaving aggressively.

My DM stayed calm but asked him to
get his dog as she was starting to get frightened. The owner then replied ‘if you’re frightened, don’t come here’. Bearing in mind we were on a public footpath in our own village, I think this is a bit much. I told the owner that it was a perfectly reasonable reaction to be scared of a growling dog repeatedly jumping up at you in a public place. In the end, we walked away because you cannot reason with unreasonable people.

He acted like we were being unreasonable. My DM thinks I ought to let it go but I’m wondering if it is worth a call to either the council or the non emergency police. I’m really worried that this might happen again and potentially to a child.

Make the call. If you have a local dog warden, call them too. It’s unacceptable for the owner to allow his dog to be out of control and he sounds frightening.

Make the call. Owners are meant to keep their dogs under control. It could have cause an accident if it had run into the road.

Dog attacks should be reported to the police. My Uncle was bitten by an Alsatian whilst on a walk earlier this year and when I searched online I read this on a police website

EllieRosesMammy · 26/12/2024 16:49

100% call the police on the non emergency number. Guy sounds like an absolute arse and it's probably not the first time that's happened - based on his lack of regard to the situation.

lolly792 · 26/12/2024 16:51

Absolutely report the arsehole dog owner to the police

Midlifecrisisxamillion · 26/12/2024 17:23

Sounds like a very shitty owner but nothing will be done. They won't see it as an attack if the dog 'just' jumped up and growled.

caramac04 · 26/12/2024 18:25

I would report it.

Dbank · 26/12/2024 18:48

Please report it ASAP, before someone is badly hurt.

biscuitsandbooks · 26/12/2024 18:52

As you know the address, I would definitely report it. It's against the law to have a dog out of control in public, and you can be prosecuted if someone feels "at risk" of a bite. The dog doesn't actually need to actually have bitten someone to be considered a danger.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 26/12/2024 18:56

I would report. He needs to put a muzzle on that dog. Imagine if you had a baby in your arms or you didn't have your car with you

Miloarmadillo2 · 26/12/2024 19:17

Report it to the non emergency police number and the dog warden - it’s an offence to have the dog dangerously out of control and it only needs to cause ‘reasonable apprehension’ that it might injure someone, an offence has been committed irrespective of whether it actually bites anyone.

NotMyKidsThough · 15/07/2025 10:43

Police. Every time. It's their job, after all. This time nobody got bitten. The dog is obviously not under control. Next time someone might not be so lucky.
