As a British person (or foreigner), if you had to give your opinion, what would you say is generally considered to be the most famous/prestigious/talked about of the following three:

  1. In terms of soap operas, is Coronation Street or Eastenders more famous and when someone thinks of the classic/stereotypical British soap between these two, which are they more likely to choose?
  2. In terms of universities, between Oxford and Cambridge, which is generally more famous among Brits?
  3. In terms of supermarkets, between Asda and Tesco, which is most famous?

1 probably Corrie, but I don’t watch either of them.
2 defo equal, they are frequently mentioned together and interchangeably
3 hmmmm, probably Tesco, but it’s a close one

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/12/2024 13:03
  1. Corrie is much older, so probably Corrie.
  2. Absolutely equal
  3. Probably Tesco, but Asda seems bigger in the N or England.

I'd say 1. and 3. are down to individual's towns, experiences, upbringings etc.

NewNameNoelle · 25/12/2024 13:05

For me: Eastenders, Cambridge, Tesco

RustyBear · 25/12/2024 13:05
  1. Coronation Street - for one thing it’s been around a lot longer.
  2. Both - that’s why the term Oxbridge was coined. Though I suppose it could have been Camford…
  3. Tesco
PureBoggin · 25/12/2024 13:06

Corrie, Oxford, Tesco

Hisnutsroastingonanopenfire · 25/12/2024 13:08

Corrie
Equal
Asda

In all 3, I'd say both options are so famous that there isn't really one that's more so than the other. One might be mentioned before the other, but not because it's more "famous" but just personal preference. Everyone in the country will have heard of both.

AdviceAdvice123 · 25/12/2024 16:23

They’re all equal. You might think of one or the other first (I’d say Eastenders, Oxford, Tesco), but I cannot imagine a Brit who hasn’t heard of all of them.

I hadn’t seen your post before I said almost exactly the same!

I’d say Tesco more than Asda, marginally but agree on the other two options. There isn’t much to pick between Eastenders/Corrie or Ox/Camb.

PrincessAnne4Eva · 25/12/2024 16:26

Asda and Tesco aren't prestigious at all. They're totally basic. Waitrose is the most prestigious of the supermarkets available across the country. Oxford and Cambridge are so inextricable as to be amalgamated into Oxbridge. Eastenders vs Coronation Street is generally extreme drama vs gentler drama, many people used to watch both but Eastenders' viewing figures have been dire of late so it's probably on borrowed time, neither are intellectual or prestigious. None of these things are "more" famous, that's overly reductive and smacks of an attempt to stereotype Britain. What a bizarre thread.

ByHeartyCyanMentor · 25/12/2024 16:28

I would say Eastenders, Oxford and Tesco.
Eastenders because growing up I wasn’t allowed to watch ITV so wasn’t exposed to Coronation Street.

Needmorelego · 25/12/2024 16:36

Strange questions 😂
I don't think either in the 3 examples are better/well known/prestigious than the other.
They're kinda just......there ! If that makes sense.
EastEnders and Corrie is more popular with older folks these days and if they watch one they watch the other.
Those who don't watch them don't really think about them.
Tesco or Asda. Most people I know just shop at their most convenient supermarket. They don't care which one it is.
Oxford vs Cambridge. I'm going to be honest - for a lot of people they (the universities) aren't even on their radar. They are just 2 universities among many.

tweddler · 25/12/2024 16:44

Oxford is much more socially prestigious than Cambridge. For example, the last Prime Minister who attended Cambridge was Stanley Baldwin, who took office over 100 years ago. Since him, there have been 20 PMs by my count, of whom 80% went to Oxford, including all of the most recent six PMs.

Also, Tesco and Corrie.

OfficerChurlish · 25/12/2024 16:44

As a British person not currently living in Britain, I'd say -

Definitely Coronation Street; it's often cited by media studies people as the original/classic soap opera, at least in the English-speaking world.

The universities are equally famous/prestigious, but Oxford as a city is more of a "destination" and has a more romantic/literary image or reputation.

Tesco's better known internationally, but neither holds a candle to M&S.

FelixtheAardvark · 25/12/2024 16:47

Corrie
Cambridge
Tesco

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 25/12/2024 16:48

Soaps - none are 'prestigious'. The ones you mention are equally well known.

Oxford and Cambridge - equal.

Asda and Tesco, again - neither is prestigious at all. Both are equally well known.
