Any defrosting experts out there?!

I can’t find specifics on google. I have a 2kg chicken, which has been in the freezer since I bought it a couple of weeks ago. This morning at 7am I moved it to the (normal temperature) fridge, but it’s still frozen solid. It doesn’t feel any different from this morning. I want to be putting it in the oven about midday tomorrow. My Mum has suggested putting it in a covered dish in the garage overnight, where it’s forecast to be 9 degrees C all night.
Is that likely to be OK, or is 9 degrees too warm to be leaving it for the whole night?

If I leave it in the fridge all night I reckon it’ll still be rock solid in the morning!
Maybe I should leave it in the fridge then put it in cold water tomorrow?
Help!!

Put it in the (empty) kitchen sink it may defrost in time with the ambient temperature.

I find if I try to defrost in the fridge it just takes too long, so I usually just leave it at room temperature. I have never got food poisoning and I do a lot of defrosting this way.

Same here, only it’s a Turkey! I have just put it in the garage covered in foil and hoping for the best.

I have driven myself mad reading all the dire warnings about giving people food poisoning.

I do too.

I’m feeling the pressure. I’m not a cook, I never do a roast, but I’m doing Christmas dinner for 5 tomorrow and I really don’t want to poison everyone!

It'll be fine left in the kitchen overnight.

I never defrost in the fridge. It doesn't seem to work! If you're really on a deadline I would put it in the sink and cover with water, change the water every 30 mins. I'm no good hygiene expert though!

twobluehorses · 24/12/2024 20:40

If it’s a chicken it will be completely fine. I cook chickens from frozen sometimes. Use a meat thermometer and all will be well

BigYellowDucky · 24/12/2024 20:41

It will be absolutely fine left overnight in the kitchen.

I never defrost in the fridge, it takes far too long.

RainbowWhy · 24/12/2024 20:55

I put my frozen 2.8kg turkey crown in the fridge on Sunday to defrost as I know from experience how long it takes. It is now defrosted ready for tomorrow morning, so in reality the defrosting guidance isn’t accurate. In your situation I would defrost outside of the fridge as time is short.

andjustlikethat1 · 24/12/2024 20:56

Leave on the kitchen counter over night I do it every week and you will be just fine xxxx

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 24/12/2024 21:15

For an emergency defrost you can submerge things in a bowl of cold water. Ideally make sure it's in a sealed bag first.

Flangeosaurus · 24/12/2024 21:18

Just stick it on the kitchen counter. Every time I do a roast chicken I just take it out the night before and leave it in the kitchen. All will be fine

abigaail · 24/12/2024 22:07

I always defrost my chickens overnight on the kitchen worktop. I'm still alive!

I agree, you don't have the heating on over night,do you OP? My kitchen is freezing so is fine.
