Age gap between sibling and Christmas morning?

I have a very excited 11yr old who is wanting to be up at 7 open her pressies straight away!

I also have a 15yr old, who is excited but being cool and not showing it. He does not want to wake up at 7!… And honestly neither do me or dh.

So we’ve come up with a compromise of 8am DD can come in to our room and open stocking. DS can have a lie in whilst this is happening, and DH can make breakfast which will take about half an hour.

We can all eat breakfast together, then kids can open their pressies.

What do you do?

The teens have to suck it up for one day a year, they then can go back to bed after stockings if they want to, as we do family presents a little later in the day. Mine did get into the Christmas spirit after a nice hot chocolate was made for them though 😁

My teen DD is usually up first and wakes up the siblings who all come into our room with their stockings and we pretend we are sleepy like we haven't been awake waiting for them to get up since 6am!

My ds20 will probably be up before the 11 year old!

You make your kids wait until 8am to get up on Christmas Day @CouchSpud and then even later to open their presents?! 😯

I asked my 19 yr old what he wanted to do, if he wanted to get up at 8am with everyone else or just stay in bed and he said he'd get up. Even though he'll probably be out with pals tonight and not get in till 4am. But he can go back to bed afterwards if he wants to.

This is what we’re trying to figure out.

Usually they’re up and opened presents and done by 8.

I want to string it out a bit.

20yr olds have got over the ‘I’m a cool teen’ stage.

Wwve always done gifts after breakfast, even as small children they coped. Stockings first thing (usually 8am!), breakfast then presents around half 9ish.

8am isn't that late... left to her own devices my 11 yo will still ve asleep by then this year!

This sounds good to me

We suck it up, and get up whenever the first person is up! It's one day, can have a lie in on Boxing Day!

turkeyboots · 24/12/2024 12:05

We've always had a rule that no-one can go down stairs til 7am. Santa brought toys and chocolate in stockings which could be opened any time after 5am.
The 5 am rule came about after DD woke the house at 3am to tell us all about her stocking presents.
However DC are late teens now and I'm fairly sure I'll be up before them!

6 years between my sister & I.
She always had permission to come and wake me up, providing it was not a shouty wake up. If it was too early, I’d persuade her it was only [lies about time] and we should snuggle together to make the time pass faster. We’d usually all agree from 7:30am was ok.

Santalikespies · 24/12/2024 12:15

We have a rule similar to above. No one is allowed downstairs until 7. When the first one is awake we are all getting up. My boys are 17 and 18 now and set an alarm to get up! We’ve got our Xmas eve boxes to open later too. We’re very excited xxx

13 year age gap between DC1 & 2 and DC3. The rule is no one downstairs (where the stockings are) until 7am. Then we all get up & open stockings straight away and presents under the tree after breakfast (around 8am).

Older 2 can then go back to bed (which they always do) until lunch is ready.

Works for us
