Queuing at the bar? In a pub?

So I’m British, left the UK 20+ years ago and have been living in France for the last 17 yrs. during that time ‘pubs’ have become much more popular in France - Brit-style bars with craft beers and informal food options, rather than more formal menus / table service. One big difference is that they generally make customers queue to get served at the bar! In one close to us, they have built a lovely long wooden bar - but no one is allowed to approach it! It’s purely decorative to make the place look like a pub. You have to go to this tiny serving bar alongside and queue up (for hours) to get served.

in another place where you dont have to queue, they’ve had to put up signs saying ‘don’t queue - just walk up to the bar and ask for your drinks’ - but a queue forms anyway. I walked straight up to the bar and got frowned at by the queue 🤦‍♀️. In another place, which had at least 5 bar staff standing at various points along it, I got sent away from the bar and told to queue.

i just read an post on Twitter that queuing is becoming more widespread in British pubs 😱 Is this true?

it’s so weird that pubs are the only place that French people will willingly queue, and it’s always been the one place that British people don’t 😂

That's so funny. You need to start a campaign to teach the French how not to queue in a pub. 😀

I noticed people queuing in. Pubs after COVID. I don't see it now. But in a way I'm not sure what why we don't..

I didnt mean to quote you !

This is one reason I dislike pubs. Getting served at the bar as a short, middle-aged woman is never straightforward. Perhaps I’ll move to France…

Yep,it's a free-for-all at pub bars.

I’ve never understood why they don’t have a queuing system at a pub bar. I rarely go into a pub these days but it’ always a free for all even years ago.
