Kept getting bitter courgettes from Asda

I'm not a fan of courgettes but our toddler is, so we order courgettes in our weekly grocery deliveries from Asda. The ones we received in recent weeks seem to all have a bitter flavour. Some I only realised after serving half of it to our toddler! I thought bitter courgettes are poisonous? It didn't seem to have bothered our toddler much though fingers crossed... anyone has similar experience or thoughts please?

Google it? Quicker than loads if random replies.
Some are nicer than others sometimes they taste soapy. I've never been ill from courgettes .
If it tastes that bad surely your child just refuses to eat it?

Maybe because it’s winter and they’ve travelled a long way? Try your toddler with some winter veg, they might like it

I find they go bitter if not really fresh. I wonder how long they've been hanging around before buying them.

As per @Seeline , I think the bitter ones are less fresh. I used to serve/eat steamed courgette often and I found that a tiny sprinkling of salt cut the bitterness well. I can understand if you're not keen to salt your toddler's food.

Does your toddler complain?

UnaOfStormhold · 23/12/2024 19:41

It's often the peel where the bitterness is worst so often they can be rescued by peeling. I think some varieties behave like cucumbers and get bitter if they're pollinated.

Thank you all! Think my toddler only spit it out once. Other times he didn't complain and I only found it out afterwards. I always serve it peeled so even just the flesh it was bitter. But interesting to see that despite most google results suggest that you should not eat it, people seem to consume it without much problem? Otherwise can't imagine how many people Asda has managed to poison... I've had friends who got upset stomach by their home grown bitter courgettes though.

I'm sure you will be ok, try another supplier? We use courgette in loads of our food and I've never peeled one, I might try it to see if any difference in taste
