Anyone can describe themselves on LinkedIn as an expert / industry leader...

The job market is incredibly tough as many companies now outsource development to offshore organisations or have offices abroad, its much cheaper for them to hire developers elsewhere.

Agile is not a methodology.

Netcam · 23/12/2024 17:43

You're never too old to start, I got my first job as a developer in a company aged 54.

BigTubOfLard · 24/12/2024 07:09

If your company disables the recording function on Teams and won't allow you to install software without approval, you can record your screen and sound using the Windows utility called Game bar. My manager is training me online and being able to record these sessions allows me to take notes at my leisure rather than hurriedly scribbling stuff down.

mantaraya · 24/12/2024 07:43

If you've got a computer-based job then you need to plan for AI pulling the rug from under you. If you're not sure then ask ChatGPT!

katmarie · 24/12/2024 07:46

There are lots of non technical roles in the software industry. I work for a software company as a business analyst, basically helping new clients specify our products to their requirements. I don't have any tech qualifications, but worked in the client industry for a while so I speak their language.

Be aware. Because this is not permitted, if you were found out, this would be a conduct issue at my work.

If your company disables recording, it's probably for good reason. You'd be risking getting sacked in my company for doing this.

Even in jobs that involve physical work, like farming gardening, childcare??

How are these computer based?

If you need to contact support about issues with your user account, you do not need to tell me your password, and you definitely shouldn't be sending it to me in a plain text email. I am root. I have the power.

If you're a developer who is programming systems which are meant to have security in mind at all times, I really, really shouldn't have to tell you this. And yes, I am going to force a password change every time you do it. What sort of shoddy programs are you developing that you need this explaining?

<and breathe>

toodles9 · 24/12/2024 08:00

@EBearhug xpost!

EBearhug · 24/12/2024 08:07

There's a lot of IT in agriculture these days. You can program tractors and sprayers to increase or decrease fertiliser to the parts of the field that need it more because of the soil structure in that part. You can get driverless vehicles to fo this on a field. You can get automated milking parlours, where the cows take themselves in.

There are all sorts of areas in agriculture where technology like sat nav, robotics and so on are changing things. Many farmers won't be using them - it's expensive kit, and many want to see how their crops are growing and see their animals. But there's a lot of development going on out there.

BeyondMyWits · 24/12/2024 08:07

Sometimes switching it off then on again will just fix it. Actually do it. Don't say you've done it. Do it.

Oh and the AI thing... absolutely. Playing round with it at the moment. Programmers are on the endangered list.
Lots are moving into specification production... in other words, defining parameters that you want the AI produced system to work to.

@EBearhug I take your point but how would work find out though?
@toodles9 same question.

Depends what they log, but it is likely to be all the processes that run. It's likely that they won't look at the logs unless there's a problem, but it could come up if they investigate another issue. It's also possible they have something running to pick up on key words - it would be more likely to be things like "error" and "warning", but they can search for anything they like. And if they had reason to check, they could take in your laptop and go through it all.

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/12/2024 08:30

I take your point but how would work find out though?

Simply by having an inventory agent installed on your machine, that collects all sorts of metrics. One being what software is installed and/or runs on your machine.

I'm forever getting "pulled up" on running so called unauthorised software on my machine. Does make me laugh, as it's one of our products and my job to implement it. Glad that the Service Desk are up to speed on the products we develop.

CandiedPrincess · 24/12/2024 08:34

I work in programming, developing and there's a lot of fear around AI however it will always need a human element. AI will not steal your job, but it will change your job, so start upskilling!

You don't have to be even slightly technical to have a successful career in tech

Hugmorecats · 24/12/2024 08:51

I can’t magically make a webpage look like it does in the Word document vision you’ve sent, I’m working within the restrictions of our content management system which has set templates and components

This is true. Also, nobody knows everything about IT so try to be curious and don't be embarrassed about not knowing something.
Turning it off, leaving it for 5 mins and then turning it on again will fix many issues.

Presumably you have obtained their consent though?
Otherwise this is just wildly unethical

To be fair, a lot of our programmers shouldn't be in charge of what they write. Inefficient code and when one issue is fixed, they cause five more.

My job doesn't include writing works of fiction or hallucinating program functions that don't actually exist so I'm not too concerned at the moment!

Coupled with the fact that for AI to work well you have to give it good instructions/specification which is something sadly lacking on most projects I work on.
