Films that you can't watch without thinking of your late parent

I am currently watching 'Calamity Jane' on BBC Two and by god this film reminds me so much of my lovely Mum. She loved 'musicals' and I have such amazing memories of us watching this together when I was both a kid and a young adult. It has made me reminisce of those good old days and made me smile.

Sound of Music and West Side Story induce similar feelings of nostalgia.

So I was just wondering, do any of you have any old films that come on TV that make you think of your beloved late parent/grandparent etc?

The fact that I don’t have to sit through ‘The fucking Great Escape’ every Christmas Day afternoon is bittersweet. I miss my dad, but I don’t miss that sodding film!

Sound of Music too. She had the album and used to play it.

I thought I remembered her coming home after seeing it at the cinema but it was released in 1965, not long before I was born.

I love that film.

So many. My dad was a huge film fan, and we used to watch a lot of old classics together. The “cracking pictures” I really associate with him are: Singin’ In The Rain, any Laurel and Hardy, The Third Man, Rebecca, Twelve Angry Men, Meet Me In St. Louis…oh, too many to mention.

With my mum, it’s Alistair Sim’s version of Scrooge. She loved it, and him, and I remember buying if for her on VHS when I was a kid. I watch it every Christmas Eve and remember her when she was happy.
