Red meat consumption

How unhealthy is red meat actually? I do quite like lamb but have been told it's not the healthiest. I still eat it, but infrequently.

How often do you have red meat?

Once or twice a week for us. There are good, local sources for venison, beef, goat and pork, so we tend towards those, and are trying to increase our nose-to-tail eating. I'd normally plan a couple of fish meals each week, maybe a couple with poultry and, when available, game, a fair bit of fish and a couple of vegetarian or vegan main meals each week.

Lamb can be quite fatty, is that why you've been told it's not the healthiest? Eating a bit of lamb in the context of a widely varied diet that includes plenty plants shouldn't cause health problems.

If you don't have the time to read the research on red meat Zoe Harcombe has a short review of it here:

Or google, Zoe Harcombe red meat evidence.

It’s not unhealthy. I eat it everyday. I have cleared Psoriasis, my blood pressure is now bang on after being high and even my cellulite has cleared. I’ll get accused of lying but I don’t care. There are loads of nutrients in red meat. Oh and my cholesterol is perfect

I've been told that red meat can be carcinogenic.

The only red meat I eat is beef mince. I'm not a fan of steaks and I dislike lamb. Probably eat it around twice a week in a bolognese or other mince based dish.

I've been told that red meat can be carcinogenic.

I think that's mainly processed meats like hot dogs, deli meats, etc. although too much red meat has been linked with certain cancers.
(I'm vegan so don't worry about it!)

Comedycook · 23/12/2024 17:38

I totally believe that processed meat is bad for us.

I don't for a moment believe that grass fed, good quality red meat is bad for us. It's part of our natural diet. If I don't eat red meat regularly I really crave it.

Yes, I think I remember some years back the WHO classified processed meats as known carcinogens, and red meat generally as likely to be carcinogenic.

LeftoverTurkeyPie · 23/12/2024 21:13

The research that concluded red meat to be carcinogenic didn’t separate processed meat and fast food (sausages, burgers, bacon etc) from fresh red meat, and didn’t separate out common accompaniments to fast food - chips, sugary drinks etc.

Red meat will eventually be found to be a superfood. It contains nutrients that are far more bioavailable to us than any found in vegetables.

I eat red meat once or twice a week but would eat it more if I could afford to.

Xurlywhirly · 23/12/2024 21:54

I could eat a good steak breakfast, lunch and dinner!! Probably have one or two a week but would be more if we could afford it!

SwordToFlamethrower · 23/12/2024 22:40

I'm very confused about the whole redmeat debate. Some say it is the best thing you can eat, others say it is poison!

Merryberrypie · 23/12/2024 22:53

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies red meat as Group 2A carcinogen and processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogen

The China Study (book by Dr Colin Campbell) is the most comprehensive study of Nutrition ever conducted, it shows how animal proteins turn cancer cells on while plant proteins have the opposite effect. It is a mind blowing read.

MudpiesinEssex · 23/12/2024 23:03

Death from eating meat & two veg occurs immediately, if not sooner.

RedToothBrush · 23/12/2024 23:11

Lamb has the best omega 6 to omega 3 ratio of any meat.

This is good and apparently helps you against weight gain.

You shouldn't have it too often, but it's better than say beef.

mondaytosunday · 24/12/2024 00:22

Lamb is great! My favorite. Not sure the nutritional stats though.
We usually have chicken though, red meat about twice a week, fish once, chicken the rest.

KinderChocolate · 24/12/2024 00:42

Red Meat must be very unhealthy because when I was at school, our teachers said that red meat was one of the things you should give up for lent.

Despite the evidence? Oh well, if you don’t believe it, it can’t be true!

merrymelodies · 24/12/2024 01:02

As someone who is extremely allergic to legumes and egg white, I would get very tired of fish and chicken. A bit of red meat is a good source of iron and protein. Moderation in all things.
