My husband keeps falling asleep....

For about a year or more my DH keeps nodding off EVERY time he sits down on sofa. He also he quite anxious and depressed and has put on weight. He had compalined a while ago of swollen glad in his neck but has a very stressful job so we always just put it down to that and just general unwellness.

I'm wondering if it could be under active thyroid ?

He should get a check up at the Doctor's.

Thyroid. Urgent checkup required.

Off to the doctor for him!

Yes I really have myself convinced that this is what he has. I've told him he needs an appointment with dr while his off for Christmas. He is a nightmare for going to the dr and always insists he's ok or 'I'll give it a few week'

Tell him he's going to feel a bit of a twat when he realises that a (relatively) simple treatment will sort all his issues out and that he suffered for no good reason.

HPandthelastwish · 22/12/2024 14:15

Is he actually depressed?

My DDad was diagnosed and treated for depression, turned out it was his thyroid and it ended up a really late diagnosis. He had also put on loads of weight and looked like the Michelin man but as he had been looking after his DParents and DBro who all got cancer one after the other the Dr just assumed depression. The thing that changed their mind was hair loss on his limbs.

Only going to the Gp will find the answer

Ask the GP for a full blood work up

  • diabetes
  • thyroid function
  • kidney function
  • liver function
  • testosterone level

Fatigue for me was actually T2 diabetes and getting it under control has been life changing. I honestly thought it was just because I'm a busy mum with a full time job, a zillion things to do and at max 6 hrs sleep a night. Nope, sugar levels were insanely high needing an immediate start on insulin and metformin and a complete change of diet and exercise.

4 months on, I'm still busy and don't get enough sleep, but I feel way more human, don't need to pee 3 times a night, have stopped snoring, lost nearly 3 stone, don't get swollen feet/ankles after a busy day and I don't need to nap constantly.

slightlydistrac · 22/12/2024 15:14

Another reason for suddenly falling asleep like this could be sleep apnoea.

IdylicDay · 22/12/2024 15:16

I was going to say it may be something like sleep apnoea. How does he sleep at night generally?

AmberBeaker · 22/12/2024 15:21

I'd guess sleep apnea. My friends DH was like this and then almost had a serious accident as he nodded off while driving. When assessed he'd a severe case of sleep apnea but neither of them had been aware. He was stopping breathing so many times per night that he was chronically exhausted without realising.
