For Christmas gift buying. If someone likes Glenfiddich what else might they like?

OP posts:
Cosycore · 22/12/2024 00:00

This is nothing like the usual Glenfiddich bottles though, it's peated so may well not be their thing.

Macallan, Glenlivet, Glenmorangie are all good shouts though

Blanketpolicy · 22/12/2024 04:44

Dalwhinnie and Cardhu are also good options

XelaM · 22/12/2024 04:47

Talisker

(I'm not a whiskey drinker but my dad is and Talisker is one of his favourite single malts 🥃)

snakeface · 22/12/2024 04:50

My husband loves Jura, over Talisker, or Monkey Shoulder.
Sainsbury's often do really good deals on Whisky

Poggishairtufts · 22/12/2024 05:36

Just to be pedantic - Scottish whisky has no 'e', Irish, American, Japanese, Indian etc is whiskey.

JohnMcClanesVest · 22/12/2024 05:58

My DH went to a whiskey tasting event and this was very popular

KohlaParasaurus · 22/12/2024 05:59

If it doesn't have to be Scotch, Bushmills is pleasant and so is Penderyn.

Nourishinghandcream · 22/12/2024 06:09

You could take a risk and try a bottle of Laphroaig.🤔
Is completely unlike Glenfiddich but unless the person you are buying for has already tasted it and declared a strong dislike, it might be worth a try?
Perhaps a miniature along with a bottle of something more mainstream?

My OH discovered it about 30yrs ago and it is his favourite but I know others dislike it intensely.

TickingAlongNicely · 22/12/2024 06:17

DH also likes Shackleton.

As a tip... Waitrose offers looked really good last week!

TinselToed · 22/12/2024 07:01

Not a regular whiskey drinker but that Nikka a pp recommended is lovely.

paradisecityx · 22/12/2024 07:11

Jamesons is lovely.

Flakeypastry · 22/12/2024 07:12

Oban

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 22/12/2024 07:24

Glenfiddich is a Speyside whisky, so they’ll presumably enjoy other Speyside single malts.

I imagine you’ll be buying from a physical shop at this point - but have a look here:

https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/d/21/speyside-favourites

and then see which of these are available wherever you’re shopping.

Agreed.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 22/12/2024 07:34

There is a diagram you can find if you google "whisky diagram" that shows all the single malts on a 2d axis of how Smokey and how full the flavour. I'd choose something close on that diagram, especially on the Smokey axis.

At this time of year there are lots of special editions out (special types of cask) that do t quite taste like the classic from that distillery so diagram wouldn't help with those

Ilovemyshed · 22/12/2024 07:38

Glengoyne, hands down

SkyGrant · 22/12/2024 09:08

My favourite is Glen Grant

I actually don’t like peated but I like Fire and Cane.

Its a nice, not too expensive and a little bit different whisky.

Nikka from the Barrel is very lovely. Non peated Japanese.

You could try Jura
but stay away from Arbeg.

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 22/12/2024 09:20

I’m an Islay malt drinker so I’d be nonplussed to receive a Speyside whisky. Only we don’t know if the OP’s recipient is equally loyal in their tastes.

BIWI · 22/12/2024 09:20

but stay away from Arbeg.
Grin

Very definitely, unless you really like peat!

@DrCoconut I'd also avoid Laphroaig, unless you know they like a peaty whisky.

RandomUserName96 · 22/12/2024 09:33

Nikka from the barrel is good

If they like a sweeter one, Glenfarclas is great

Or Glendronach, BenRiach or Clynelish

For a ridiculously easy drink, try Penderyn Legend (Welsh)

If you are going to nit pick and be pedantic at least be right

Indian and Japanese (and Canadian) whisky are without the e

It is mainly Ireland and US that use the e
