DS 8 months has chicken pox. Most of the spots are looking better but this huge spot on his arm has some redness around it which is worrying me. Would you call out of hours docs?

It doesn't looked infected to me, it kust looks like a big one. They all appear and disappear at different times, this one looks like its a more recent one.

This was actually almost the first spot! I saw it on Wednesday. He’s got tiny arms so it probably looks big in comparison. He seems fine in himself now after being poorly earlier this week.

Actually I think it does look a bit infected. You say he is now feeling better than before, so I would keep an eye on it and see how it looks tomorrow.

Thanks it’s the redness around it that’s worrying me. This wasn’t there on Thursday. I think the doctor is probably sick of me by now!

Mark where the redness is and reassess in the morning if it has spread 😄 hope he's better soon!

Is it hot? Ds had some that looked infected the Dr took a look at them and said they "should" be OK unless they get hot then he would give him antibiotics he had a horrible case of chicken pox though

Pinkstuffs · 21/12/2024 19:22

I can’t tell if it’s hot but if I try and look at it DS pulls his arm away. He is extremely wriggly though! Overall the spots don’t seem to be bothering him at all although he was very poorly Monday - Thursday.

Keep an eye on his temperature and form, check for shallow breathing. I really don't want to alarm you but bacterial infections from chickenpox can be very very serious. I know from experience with my own child who started to develop sepsis on day three of CP. The infected spot only had a red ring around it.

Pinkstuffs · 21/12/2024 19:25

Thanks @Newname1900 this is what I’m worried about as I know skin infections can spread fast. He seems absolutely fine today, no temperature at all. I might make an appointment tomorrow regardless as he’s so little.

My DC got very ill very quickly, within hours - very little energy and just wanted sleep. Very high temp and then vomited. The GP was initially saying just to keep an eye until I pressed her and then just as a precaution she said to go to A&E. When we got there DC was very floppy and turned out had a very fast heart rate. It was touch and go for about 36 hours while they pumped in broad spectrum antibiotics. Thankfully one of them worked.
I'd ring out of hours now to put your own mind at rest.
I'm sorry to frighten you, but I couldn't live with myself if I didn't tell you how serious these things can get. I had no idea.
