Induction ready pans don't work

I've got Tefal pans that are suitable for all cooking appliances and they don't work. Take forever to heat. What am I doing wrong?

Are they DEFINITELY suitable for induction? (Tefal are terrible for putting "all surfaces - except induction". They have their own induction range, inductio or something). A magnet should stick to the bottom of the pan. And there is usually an error message on your hob if the pans are unsuitable

Are you using the correct sized pan for the ring? If I use a pan that’s too big or small then it takes ages to heat.

LoftyTealSwan · 21/12/2024 14:21

Yes they are suitable

Correct size

Are you absolutely sure they are Tefal, not copies and that they are specifically induction ready? You can tell if they are suitable for induction if the bottoms stick to a magnet. Try putting the base of the pans against the seal on the door of your fridge, it will be magnetic. The other problem could be if they are not flat on the bottom. All my Tefal pans are fine on the induction hob and heat up quickly but not all Tefal models are suitable for induction.

Dearg · 21/12/2024 14:25

Do you know the rating of your induction hob? Basically, is it hardwired or plugged in. If the latter, it’s a hob issue ( doesn’t have enough power to heat multiple rings at once)

IME pans vary considerably. If the pans are new and you can return them, I would. I use LeCreuset non-stick on my induction hob and find them good.

It's hard wired. Works fine sometimes, sometimes doesn't. Think I need different pans. Are they actual non stick?

I've got many pans, bought some new, used magnets etc. think I need heavier pans

I have Scoville pans that work brilliantly on my induction hob.

Which ones? I have the light saucepans and water isn't boiling in 90 seconds. Try 9 minutes

This is the wok I have

The other pans I have are no longer made but are similar to these

It sounds like your hob is faulty TBH.

These ones. You can get them in John Lewis as a 4 piece set, but that link kept coming up with my name on it 🙄

If it's taking that long to heat water, then something is definitely wrong. I'd buy a single saucepan that is definitely suitable for induction and try it. If it works, then it's your pans, if it doesn't then it's your hob.

CombatBarbie · 21/12/2024 14:59

Always take a magnet from the fridge when I shop for pans.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 21/12/2024 15:03

It does sound as though it may be your hob. If you have a friend or neighbour with an induction hob, get them to come over with a pan that works on their hob. If it still doesn't work with yours, then your hob is faulty.

WeAllHaveWings · 21/12/2024 15:06

The tefal pans with the thin patterned base are awful and very slow on induction.

We had one where the metal bit on the bottom fell off the pan and stuck to the hob, it came off and the patterned mark it left behind eventually faded.

I always go for good flat, heavy steel based pan or cast iron and they are always very fast, they boil a large pot of tap water faster than my kettle. Avoid tefal.

A magnet test is not foolproof, we are to return some pans despite sticking to a magnet.

CatsorDogsrule · 21/12/2024 15:19

I use mostly Scoville Neverstick on mine. Only the tiny egg frying pan doesn't work, as it is too small. It also says on the packaging that it isn't suitable.

I've put away or got rid of most of my heavy pans. The lightweight ones are much easier on my wrists, especially when boiling a big pan of pasta or potatoes.
