The Quirke detective series is v good, by Benjamin Black.

Dazedandconfusedma · 21/12/2024 15:02

The Berlin Noir series by Philip Kerr. It’s about a detective working in Berlin in Nazi and Post War era. Very well written. I love both, so does my dad.

I love LeCarre because he treated his readers as intelligent people who didn't need every nuance explained in detail

Well it took me three reads of "The Little Drummer Girl" to get it, so... 😄

I would still recommend it though!

I'm a fan of many of the books and authors mentioned. Can I add Charles Cumming to the author suggestions?

TangoFoxtrotCharlie · 21/12/2024 15:36

Not a sure bet but aside from the obvious suggestion of Le Carre's other books, something like Graham Greene (e.g. Our man in Havana) or Eric Ambler (The Mask of Dimitrios) might be up your street.

TTSS is my favourite, and I came here to recommend those exact books.

i also like Mick Herron. It isn’t lecarre, but his worldbuilding references JLC a lot. He is a much lighter, easier read. But none the worse for it. Kinda feels like hopping into a modern version of TTSS world everyone is even more cynical and jaded but have decided they aren’t going to take themselves too seriously.

Do you know me?! I have the original hardcover 1974 of Tinker tailor.

Would recommend like pp the others in the trilogy. The spy who came in from the cold was a difficult read as she didn't deserve that.

A trilogy by Adam Brookes- Night Heron, Spy Games, The Spy's Daughter

I’ve watched so many films, documentaries about the Cambridge spy ring. Ben Macintyre’s book was very good. The thing that always infuriates me is how class ridden everything was. People who moved in those circles made all sorts of excuses for them because of their parents or they’d been to the right sort of school so they couldn’t possibly be traitors.

MI5 were rightly suspicious but they were seen as the grammar school, NCO class so weren’t to be listened to be the superior ex public school types at MI6.

Another vote for Philip Kerr.

Thank you all. I've got him the first Slow Horses one-despite the slightly mixed reviews on here. We'll see how it goes down!
