Do you feel or really do look daft in winter hats?

My mum has sent me a black bobble hat. One of those with a fake fur bobble. It gave me quite the turn when I opened the envelope and touched the furry bobble first as it gave me the sensation of stroking a dead animal.

I got over this distressful upsetment and it's very warm and cosy. I have worn it outside the house today. I teamed it with a slightly above the knee black dress/skirt, black opaque tights and black lace up ankle boots. I also wore a black not suede/microfiber biker jacket. (You know the type of thing.) I am very tall, lanky and ginger.

"Oh look! It's Santa's mafia elf." was said by a friend. I do live in Corsica so we often think of organised crime.

The less said about my Monsoon amethyst/purple jewelled béret the better and my tam o'shanter look was pretty dire as well.

I just look awful in winter hats. Then of course you have the winter hat with glasses look which is another minefield.

How do you manage to look good in a winter hat? Or do you just put it on and swallow your pride for the sake of warmth?

Then again, summer hats are another minefield. There is one really good photo of me in a green army bucket hat thing in which I look really cool but otherwise...

I used to have a hat with two bobbles 😂

Good for you!

Snow on the ground here, and everywhere else too.
I haven't found a hat yet that I feel I look good in, but when it's this cold, it's bobbleless hat on and hood up!
Summer, I found a straw bucket/ cloche hat that I feel like a retro film star in. My head's so deep inside the hat, I can barely peep out from under the brim...but no one else can see in, just the way I like it!

Thelnebriati · 19/12/2024 21:31

I really wanted a furry bucket hat but I looked like an elderly drug dealer.

honeyfox · 19/12/2024 21:34

I can't wear bobble hats, they just don't work on me. I keep getting them as Christmas presents though so the local charity shop is doing well 😂

I do like ones with ear flaps though.

I'm assuming that's sarcasm 😂

I can't wear bucket hats. My head kind of disappears into them, though of course some might say that's a bonus 😳

MidLifeWoman · 19/12/2024 21:40

I wear a bobble hat because it is bloody freezing out. Don’t care about the look!

Gwenhwyfar · 19/12/2024 21:41

Not only do I look shit IN my hat, but my hair also looks shit AFTER I've taken it off.
I feel the cold, so no choice...

heartforacompass · 19/12/2024 21:43

ive Never thought about how other people might view me whilst wearing a bobble hat, I have 2 with two bobbles, I love them but maybe I do look a bit silly I’m mid 60s 😱

Mchorseface · 19/12/2024 21:27

Some people look effortlessly ace in hats.

I don't. I have bobble hat envy. I wear glasses and have frizzy hair. I watch people whip off their hats, scrape their hair into a beautiful messy do (that would take me an hour with a mirror!) and look ridiculously wonderful for the rest of the day. It's not fair Sad

The people who look good in bobbly hats are only half wearing them imo e.g. they're loose and not covering their ears. They're for fashion rather than warmth.

No it's not! I've lost my sarcasm gene through living in France for 24 years where it doesn't really go down well and being with a lot of Eastern Europeans with whom there is being very dry but crossing the line is...just not on.

I've said on other threads that part of me being here is to get my English back.

That's the well known syndrome called "Hat hair."

I have a hat head - I look fabulous in all kinds of hats. I’ve never met a hat that doesn’t suit me. I really should have been born in an earlier era when millinery models were a thing.

I particularly love my bobble hat. It’s silk-lined (cos my hair) and I find it both comfortable and comforting.

Blueuggboots · 19/12/2024 21:55

@KnopkaPixie - you can buy hats with silk linings....

Only curls.com

Please share a link so we can all buy silk lined bobble hats.

This thread is beyond my understanding. It’s cold therefore i put on hat… do you stand around looking in the mirror all day? Don’t have time for that!

Beezknees · 19/12/2024 21:58

Hats don't suit me at all. I don't know what it is, maybe because I have a small head and fine hair. They overpower me and make my hair look flat and my head look like a pea.

HoppityBun · 19/12/2024 21:58

LauderSyme · 19/12/2024 21:14

I look ludicrous in all manner of hats however I am old enough and ugly enough not to care, as long as they do the job I require of them, ie. keep me snug in the cold or keep the sun out of my eyes.

Same here: I’ve always looked a complete idiot whatever hat I wear but now I am old enough to embrace looking like a complete chump.

Yep. Any solution?

edwinbear · 19/12/2024 22:03

I look ridiculous in all hats - and I’ve tried every version going. But since hitting my late 40’s and in the era of giving zero fucks about what people think of me, I wear them anyway. Much to DC’s shame.

Spritz it with water, lean forwards, apply hairdryer in the crash position. Usually used at fancy weddings when you have to come up smiling for the reception with a new 'do.

Yes I'm afraid hat hair is inevitable in the winter when cold dry air contributes to static buildup, and you whip off your hat and up goes your hair with it! 🙆
I think the only thing you can do to prevent that or lessen it is to wear a hat of natural fibers such as cotton or wool.
Most hats are made of man made fibers and they create a lot of static!

OctoblocksAssemble · 19/12/2024 22:15

Many years ago I had a green crocheted hat with a woolen rose perched on the side, and the first time I wore it into work the receptionist actually burst out laughing. Didn't put me off though, I concluded a long time ago that nothing looks as good as warm feels 😜

I don't get statis. I get flat hair.

Funnywonder · 19/12/2024 22:21

Completely irrelevant, but it will always be a pom pom hat to me😆 I am not 8 and I am not a sailor in danger of hitting my bonce on a low slung cabin door, but I do like a pom pom on my hat.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/12/2024 22:21

I look like one of those photo fit wanted images in a woolly hat. Need a brim. Or a snood.
