Hi all,
I'm just looking for someone who may have experience of this.. I just had my 20 week scan and the sonographer said the baby's kidneys were bright and is looking for a repeat scan in 2 weeks.
I've gone down the google rabbit hole now I'm freaking out so need some perspective and someone to rein me back.
Did anyone have any experience of this before?
Thanks so much, I am fearing the worst right now
I posted in pregnancy but didn't get anything so trying here for traffic
Thanks again

I'm sorry, I can't help you, but just wondering if it'd be worth giving your midwife a call as they maybe able to tell you a bit more.

I’m not sure on the ‘bright’ bit but my son had enlarged kidneys on his scans - he was monitored by foetal meds and then after birth by urology. It resolved around a year old. Fingers crossed for you all!

Hi @myselfand. I’m sorry you are going through this and no one has explained what ‘bright’ kidneys mean. I would hope if it was anything too serious they would have had spoken with you at the time. I would contact your midwife as if they aren't able to explain the results they should be able to direct you to someone who can.
I am not medically trained or experienced this but I have had unexpected results at a 20 week scan. My now 4 month old was found to have only one kidney at my 20 week scan. After repeated scans they still couldn’t find one so decided it was best to scan after birth. It turns out she does have a second kidney but it’s not in the usual place. She now has regular ultrasounds and investigations to check kidney health but is healthy, happy and thriving. Take care x

Two out of my 3 children had kidney problems picked up at the 20 weeks scan, I believe kidney problems are the most commonly found anomaly at 20 weeks. Both of mine were born naturally, and monitored afterwards and then discharged with no problems

My DS had bright kidneys on one of his growth scans, and we got referred to St George’s for a scan with a specialist 2 days later.

Thankfully everything was absolutely fine and he had no issues.

It’s scary when they spot something but hopefully it won’t be anything, and if it is, it’s good they’ve spotted it now.

Thank you so much everyone, I am so worried, and no one came to explain the meaning of this to us. Both my husband and I have performed every google search known to man. It's just crap because my next scan is the new year and now have to get through Christmas and everything with this hanging over us.

I’m so sorry I’m only seeing this now.. a month later.
i had a positive outcome thankfully, I know others aren’t as fortunate. My little boy was born in April and he is flying it. He has confirmed ADPKD and subsequently I got diagnosed too.
Are you going through something similar?

Hey

Thank you so much for replying and I'm so glad to hear you had a positive outcome.

We are not sure what's going on at all, it's been weeks of scans but I'm having another scan next week after a 4 week gap so hopefully it will shed more light.

One kidney appeared bright but a couple weeks later, drs thought the brightness went down a bit. It seems to be increased in size (not the renal pelvis but the kidney itself) but only from one angle so it's really hard for doctors to interpret. They say it might be nothing but we have to wait and see. It's been a hard experience for us but really hoping for a positive outcome following next weeks scan.

Thanks again ❤️

My littles kidneys resolved by 3 years - needed regular checkups i.e blood tests, ultrasounds and urine samples. She's perfectly fine now kidney wise!

Would you mind what was wrong please? Were they echogenic on ultrasound?

Thank you for sharing ❤️

Sorry, if you don't mind me asking more, could you share what prompted the diagnosis of ADPKD?
Were you getting regular ultrasound scans and the kidneys were always appearing echogenic?

Sorry to ask such personal questions and I understand if you don't want to remember those stressful times.
