I've had success with Crest Whitening Strips, but I believe I'm on a fairly short list. The toothpastes do not work and I tried a gel tray that didn't seem to do much either.

sunshinechaser · 19/12/2024 12:08

Crest whitening strips totally work and are hassle free.

rainbowbee · 19/12/2024 12:12

If dentine is showing, that cannot be whitened. Crest strips are ok but nothing otc has the strength needed to make a huge difference.

It is illegal to sell crest whitening strips in the U.K., EU , NZ , Australia etc . This is because they contain a far higher amount of hydrogen peroxide than is deemed safe. In many cases it’s a higher percentage than even dentists are allowed to use.

So if you buy them you are putting something into your body that is sold by criminals knowingly breaking the law . https://www.which.co.uk/news/article/why-you-need-to-be-wary-of-home-tooth-whitening-kits-aTig20L4lJpb

What guarantee do you have that they are not fake or contain other chemicals etc ? Even if they are not fake putting some of the products on with the concentrations of chemicals can lead to permanent damage to teeth and gums.

You cannot legally buy anything over the counter that will whiten teeth. See your dentist for safe whitening that is appropriate for your mouth.

Why you need to be wary of home tooth whitening kits - Which? News

Home tooth whitening is big business, but legally these kits can contain only a tiny amount of active ingredient, while some dodgy ones sold online contain far more than is allowed

I've used Crest Whitening Strips when I lived in the US (where they are legal before anyone goes on at me 🙄 ) and they did nothing permanent. I've since read that actually even at that strength the results are temporary as they dehydrate the teeth making them seem whiter for a while.

I have tried quite a few at-home whitening products.

The only thing that has worked for me was Boutique Whitening which you can get via a dentist.

Simply trying to protect dentist's inflated profits.

Simply trying to protect dentist's inflated profits.

It wasn’t the dentists who brought the legislation in , it was brought in by EU, NZ and Australian governments because there is a correlation between using high percentage hydrogen peroxide , frequency of use and oral cancer . Moreover applying hydrogen peroxide in high concentrations to a precancerous lesion has been proven to tip it over into cancer. https://ec.europa.eu/health/opinions/en/tooth-whiteners/index.htm#:~:text=In%20the%20European%20Union%2C%20oral,higher%20levels%20of%20whitening%20agents.

Oral cancer kills more people in the U.K. than cervical cancer and prostate cancer combined . Rates are also increasing , especially amongst the younger population.

The law was changed so a dentist has to provide treatment , part of which is an oral cancer screen to make sure it is safe to apply.

Dentists have more than enough work in the U.K. ,EU, NZ and Australia , tooth whitening has always been but a small part.

Tooth Whiteners & Oral Hygiene Products containing hydrogen peroxide

To date, millions of tooth whitening kits have been sold across the world to consumers seeking to brighten their smiles. Tooth whitening products can be applied as paint-on gels, strips, or mouth guards, either at the dentist’s office or at home....

Opalescence works, but you'll need proper fitting trays, such as a night retainer.
(I wouldn't risk one of those mould in hot water jobs.) Even the 35% doesn't cause sensitivity.
Home Tooth Whitening. Just looked at their promotion 15% discount, end 22/12/24 with XMAS24 code. No gain to me, just passing it on.

35% is illegal to use even by a dentist in this country it is many times over the safe, allowed limit in U.K. , EU , NZ etc.
It is very, very, very likely to cause most people extreme sensitivity and for some, permanent damage .
Really not a safe suggestion and very illegal to sell to public or dentists in this country.

Night retainers are not suitable for bleaching as they do not have reservoirs like whitening trays will have. In other words the solution will squirt onto gums rather than being held against teeth . See a dentist for safe, properly fitting whitening trays.

I get the strips in the US from Walmart etc - I wouldn't buy them here or online for the reasons mentioned. They do seem to cause sensitivity in some people. DP had the ultraviolet (?) whitening done in London - apparently seven shades lighter but I didn't notice that much difference.

Sunshineandoranges · 19/12/2024 16:30

I had some success with the Colgate stuff in red tube..wouldn’t pay 16 pounds for it but worth a try when on promotion for 8 pounds imo.

Lollygaggle · 19/12/2024 16:38

Anything you can legally buy over the counter in the U.K. will not whiten teeth.

It may remove staining by being acidic or abrasive , but what is acidic or abrasive will also remove enamel as well, so not advised except very, very occaisionally .

GameofPhones · 19/12/2024 17:42

I've noticed that skin tone makes a difference. I mentioned this to the dentist, and he said the best way to have white teeth is a tan and lipstick.
